Interesting as usual at Zonal Marking:

His impressions of Downing in particular are different to what I've generally seen on here.

What REALLY ****ing frustrates me is that we often have just Carroll in the D, if even that. I mean what the ****? Is it that hard to commit 4-5-6 players into the final third. I just don't get it how often there is literally NO ONE in the box, beggars belief and I know **** all about football in the grand scheme of things, but if I were manager, it's the first thing I'd make sure of, attacking as a fluid 4-5 piece unit. Just don't get it. I see it time and time again, maybe I'm selectively remembering, but it's not the first time I've noticed it.
I'm not sure you have to commit large numbers into the box (although more than the none we had too often in the City game is preferable). I think the way Rafa used space with just Torres in and Gerrard coming from deep was a good example of how movement and positioning can often be as useful as numbers. I think a big problem is how static Carroll is, which is made worse when we have no drive from midfield.

OK, so Richards gave him space because of that chance at 0-0...

And what did Downing do with it?

That, I think, is people's main gripe with him. It's certainly mine.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

My impression was that there was rarely anyone in the middle to aim for. Obviously he could have done more but I think he was far from as bad as some make out. The problems to me seem more about the shape of the team (no runner in central midfield and consequently no drive allied to a static forward line) than specific failings.

He passed back a lot and only once in the game tried to pass the ball into the box (unsuccessfully).

              Yeah, could be.

Either way, we looked pretty ****.

That is true about the middle, but it is not like Downing tried much else aside from constantly playing it back to Enrique. He also only tried to take on Richards once.

When he ran past him in the first half? Hmm, I seem to remember another time when he tried to beat him with a trick - surprisingly for an international winger, he didn't seem to have one.

OK, that's my Stewie-bashing done for now. He frustrated the hell out of me the other day but he wasn't the only one.

Man City away is the toughest fixture of the season by some distance and we started with a front 3 of Carroll, Kuyt and Downing and a midfield of Spearing, Adam and Henderson. We were never going to get 3 points with a line up like that I'm afraid. I'm not blaming Kenny because injuries and suspensions tied his hands to a degree although I still think Maxi deserved to start.
Our next league game is Stoke at Anfield IIRC, we should win that.

Interesting video. Didn't know Houllier was there and see Joe Hart's reaction when he heard Suarez wasn't going to play..

Did you notice the number of security officers/body guards in their hallway

Not even the president of country has that type of protection.
