For me, I can't help but wonder what our style - or quality - of play would have been at the end of last season if we had actually signed Adam last January, or indeed if Carroll had been fit. Man City apart, for the few games that Andy Carroll played at the end of last season it seemed that our quality noticeably deteriorated. Would Dalglish have got the job full-time if he had got all the signings he wanted playing regularly at the end of last season?

I think the elephant in the room is that we are not progressing as a team and responsibility has to fall largely at the feet of the manager. Just because he is King Kenny shouldn't make him immune to criticism.

Long term, one of the big worries I have is that the youth team was supposed to have links with the first team's style of play, or at least play in a similar way to enable an easier transfer for the players from youth/reserves into the first team. Where would Suso for example play in our current first team? Or Silva, Coady, Adorjan or even Sterling? We do not have a settled formation and it seems that any formation we do play negates the potential of our youth team, which seems crazy long term. Just when we seemed to be getting a style of play running throughout the club, it all changes. I remember Guardiola saying something along the lines of that we have some quality players that could come through but this needs managing correctly. Are we really doing this?
there's an elephant in the room? i thought we'd been pretty reasonably vocal about kenny's recent shortcomings.

The people who want Rafa back need to realize that this club needs to look to the future and not the past. It's our yearning for the past that brought back Kenny and look how that is working out.
If Rafa came back his first few months/season would be decent but eventually the old flaws would begin to creep back in - negative football, poor signings, inability to accept responsibility for mistakes and bizarre team selections.

And to think that 14 months ago Frank Rijkaard was out of a job, he's the manager I wanted back then to replace Roy and I still believe he may be the right man.

Kenny Dalglish just said some players won't be in red shirts much longer if play like that again. Said they were disrespectful. Strong. #lfc

Time to knock the Carroll thing on the head. Buy a young striker with pace and relegate Carroll to the bench. Either that or sell. We can't wait for this potential. I'm sure there is a decent striker in there somewhere but if Kenny has any sort of self presevation bone in his body he needs to be ruthless with the likes of Adam, Carroll, Downing and Kuyt. The next clearout starts here.

Comolli isn't dirt free in this. He's part of the team that has made the worst signings in the history of the club.

Downing, Adam and Carroll - better or worse than Houllier's collective turd in 2002?

Wow. Fair play Kenny. Although as manager the buck stops with him, as it always does. His 'tactics' were ****.

Worse given the exorbitant, insane fees we paid for two of the three. £62m for those 3.

if his tactics required any kind of playing football, not sure there's much kenny could have done for us today as manager.

The thing is, with Rafa, he made mistakes. But he made so many little improvements for each and everyone of the players. He got the best out of Torres, the best out of Gerrard, he got the very best out of Alonso, the best out of Mascherano, the best out of Benayoun, the very best out of Riera, the best out of Arbeloa, the best out of Lucas, the best out of Carra, the best out of Agger, the best out of Reina, he made all those little pure genius improvements that separate the good from the best. For all his faults, he always had a tactical improvement, he was like the brilliant Steinway pianist who could still play the £50 guitar well if he had to. THAT's what made Rafa special, that he knew how to get those 5% improvements out of the players he had at his disposal and - especially - the financial restraints he had to work in!

@Shaggy I'd like to see a Tomkins analysis of how much they would cost nowadays. How much in modern money.

Fair play, there have been those that have been vocal about this, but there have also been quite a few apologists too. And not just in the sense that we need to give a manager time. For me it is the regression or at least lack of noticeable progression from last season that is one of the big worries.
