I think it's a mixture of points 2 & 3 in your post. I think it's clear where we need to strengthen and the fact of the matter is that there wasn't anyone worthwhile to pursue.

We clearly need another striker, a creative winger, a defensive midfielder, but were there any realistic options in January bar Tevez on loan?

We should have a much larger transfer kitty in the summer anyway. We wanted Wickham for £8million according to reports before he chose Sunderland, and we then sold Meireles. Top that up with what our profits are and it should all point to a warchest.

I think the current economic climate caught up with football.

Potential buys were over-priced and we (and pretty much the rest of the Premiership) thought they would get more value for money dealing in the summer transfer market. None of our rivals strengthened, other than the odd Spurs signings - but I think that highlights squad depth rather then quality.

We've shown faith in Spearing covering for the injured Lucas, Carroll finding his feet and Kuyt finding his form which has reaped rewards. Our defence is relatively solid, we've created chances and our strikers are now finding form - no need to spend for spendings sake and no need to unsettle the squad, see how strongly they finish and address it in the summer.

Well if Harry didnt do lots of deals, i am not sure they were there to be had.

there was not much movement really out there other than stop gaps - so maybe we thought, it's a bit of gamble, but rahter than just bringing in a stop gap, we'll wait and get the players we want in the summer...


it's frustrating though, because it feels like for the last 10 years or more, we are always just one or two players short of having a 'great' squad.

If we can keep the bulk of this squad together in the summer, and add the two or three players we really need we could be close....and i reckon we could do that for up to £100m easily. Sign three top class players!

It`s also probably down to how many players we have signes the last year. Enrique, Adam, Carroll, Suarez, Downing, Bellamy and Henderson are all usually involved in matches. Of these only Suarez has been available for a year.That`s a lot of players to bed in.

There needs to be some real ambition shown in the next window. Just been reading Didi's autobiography, and I forgot that Houllier brought in 7 players in one summer. 7! Some of those signings were a bedrock that wasn't there, but it was a fairly big signal of intent. Sure, we have sounder foundations now, but there needs to be embelishment to push us on to challenge for the league title - we're a million miles away from that now.

If that isn't coming, I really worry for the long term future. I don't want LFC to be a club struggling to qualify for the ECL and that to be the top end of our ambitions - thats quite depressing when you think about it.

I think we looked at a few deals but either the right players weren't available or the prices were wrong.

I suspect we will be hoping that we will have Gerrard and Suarez available for the rest of the season and that between then they will be able to minimise the problems we had earlier in the season.

I think all 3 points are valid. Point one has to be said after we spent so much last summer and only if a major player coming online would be bought to upgrade what we already have. It appears that those that meet the criteria are either overpriced, unavailable or wont come because we lack CL football and don't look lilely to offer it soon.

Spending money in the transfer window just gone would of undermined the large amount kenny spent in the summer. We have the right amount of depth everywhere except upfront but with Gerrard coming back to full fitness we'll be getting goals from other sources. The squad we have is good enough to reach the objectives of a top 4 finish and 2 cup finals.

Spot on - think the owners have probably realised that most signings during this time of he year are always rushed and as a result, you end up paying a higher amount.
