I think his point about Cardiff was that any club can go on a cup run - even for a championship side, it's hardly unheard of to get to the final of the carling cup. As such, I think it's dangerous to let the fact that we've won it paper over any cracks that our performances in the league have blately exposed.Originally posted by MrMichael View PostPersonally I think clueless is an overexaggeration, and the Cardiff point is silly. We nearly got done by West Ham in 2006. And Birmingham in 2001. Cup finals are something different. As for clueless, we just haven't been that bad this year, despite the results not coming overall. What is true is that those signings haven't made much of a contribution at all, however I can see what we were trying to achieve with them. Its just not worked as a whole. Plus the fees were far too big, but is that Kenny's fault or Comolli's?
Our outlay has been huge. However the amount we got in has also been huge. I remember years of people beating Rafa with this stick, it was unfair then and it is unfair now. Total spend is much less relevant than net spend, to me anyway, and in net terms we actually haven't spent that much when the period of chronic underinvestment before hand is considered. We still haven't improved to the tone of £35m either, but bandying about much larger figures which fail to take into account the money in, and the sheer amount of work that we did need to do on the squad at the point Kenny took over, seems a little hyperbolic to me.
Regarding the Dalglish / Comolli dynamic. It's hard to know isn't it. 6 of one half a dozen of the other at best. But I would be very surprised if it wasn't Kenny calling the shots behind the scenes. Comolli is director of football (or at least has that responsiblity with a different title) - can you really imagine him tell Kenny how Liverpool should be playing? Because I can't.
I think most of us could see some logic in our transfer strategy last summer, but it's simplistic thinking at best - British players, know the premiership, hit the ground running, big performers for lower clubs... looking back, it was all very Hodgeson-esq.
Net spending or not, we've spent a LOT of money over the last 12 months, and it has not been spent wisely. Will we get the opportunity to spend that kindof money again? Unless we sell Suarez, I doubt it. Hugely, hugely dissapointing, and the buck has to stop with the manager.K ris90210
