    Best ever Liverpool side?

    Come on, show your age

I'm from South Africa and we only got television in 1975 (honestly) and some live sport came in the early '80's.

I remember the European Cup winning sides under Paisley and Fagan, but the team King Kenny put together with Barnes & Beardsley is still the best I've ever seen. That team of 87/88 was untouchable and them, against the great Milan side of the time would have been one of the greatest contests in history.

The best part about that season was that each match they seemed to be redefining the way the game should be played.

I've heard the team of 1965 was something special and the first European Cup winning side was almost unplayable, maybe the grandfathers can shed some light on the subject.

Well, as one of the geriatrics I have to say that the team of the 60s was good for what it was, but football was much less sophisticated than today. We won the cup in 65 using only 14 players. It would be impossible to repeat that feat now.

The 77 European Cup team was excellent - I was lucky enough to be in Rome for the final - but statistically the 79 team was our best. Their record was much better than the late 80s teams with Barnes, Aldridge, Beardsley etc although perhaps the individual players weren't as good; but the 79 team was much better than the sum of its parts

The team which won the European Cup in 1981 stand out to me the best side I can remember. The team which played in the final was as follows:

Ray Clemence; Phil Neal, Phil Thompson (c), Alan Hansen, Alan Kennedy; Sammy Lee, Terry McDermott, Graeme Souness, Ray Kennedy; Kenny Dalglish (87' Jimmy Case), David Johnson

Replace Johnson for Rush (who came through the following year) and that is some team.
