Sunderland knew we were interested in Henderson, they vauled him at £5-6m, Bruce and Quinn were going to try and push us up to paying £8-9m for him.Originally posted by Rich View PostWhat's the story?
We (Comolli) came in and offered £14m as an opening bid, Sunderland obviously realised they could get more out of us as no-one expects the opening offer to be accepted, the final deal was something along the lines of £13m plus add ons for appearances, full England caps and trophies.
What's naive from us is we didn't sound out the agent to get a gauge what Sunderland valued Henderson at, we didn't sound out Sunderland to try and find a level to pitch at we just steamed in.
The Carroll deal was different but we clearly could have got Henderson and Downing for less, a combined saving of £8-10m on those fees is another player.
My opinion for what it's worth is FSG got rid of Comolli because he wasn't providing value for money with the signings and they clearly didn't have any faith that this would change this summer.
Bizarrely Adam, Enrique and Coates are are reasonably priced for the return on the pitch they're giving us so they were 'good business' also getting £50m for Torres was great business so Comolli's bad equals out his good for me.
All it means is FSG don't tolerate 'failure' or anyone not delvering on what they promised.
Kenny is next, if we haven't improved by Christmas next year then he'll also be goneLast edited by The Birdman; 12-04-12, 01:18 PM.The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Sounds like the Leeds/Seth Johnson deal.
Apparently his agent had told him that he'd try and get him 20k a week but would he settle for 15k? They went in for the meeting with Ridsdale and he immediately offered him 60k a week.
