Makes no sense except when you ask Ian Ayre for an opinion and then you just know that Rafa's not going to get any kind of fair hearing

Depends how real the new role is I would say. It could easily be a face saving thing. Could be he won his battle but generated too much resentment even with people technically 'on his side' to actually carry the work forward. Or perhaps now he feels there is no one to work with.

I guess Lecter's slightly different take is also perfectly viable.

I have to say I'm a bit sceptical about it all.

As I said earlier if you look at the 3 candidates that have been mentioned to replace Comolli as "Director of Football" - Johan Cruyff, Louis Van Gaal and Tixi Begiristain, the obvious choice should be Begiristain because that is his field. I don't see think the other two would be suited in that role as Begiristain would. For me if Cruyff comes in then I agree with Colin, I don't see him doing the same job as Comolli. He is not dof material imo.

Tharts my worry about him he seems to do that everywhere he goes
          Same here.

He has very strong views about how he wants the clube to be run and that type of approach (very little compromise, not listening to others point of view etc.) seems to alienate people where-ever he goes

Cruyff's accepted a deal in principle.

All i was told is that he's accepted a deal in principle but that there's still a long way to go due to his ties. No idea what that means.

Did Cruyff have any dealings with Suarez while at Ajax, and if so, were they amicable ?

Not comfortable with Cruyff. As Lecter said he's a nuisance. On the plus side he's a bigger name in world football than Dalglish and that would help when it comes to buying players.

Got to admit though I love the tales about him at Barcelona and what he use to do on the training pitch
                    What was that then?

Well he was on Ajax board at the time so he was either informed or involved in selling process.

                        Cryuff or Lecter?

Cruyff would be a huge risk but it's also ridiculously exciting.

Cruyff? Don't know if he's any good in that kind of role, but if he was good enough for Barca he should be good enough for us. Only worry is that if I remember correctly he has a couple of times spoken out in a not clever way to the media.
