We didn't even try for him. Arsenal almost snapped him up for his buy-out clause (between £18m-£22m).
Apparently, it was Arsenal and Chelsea in for him according to his agent. We can bring top players in if we have the gaul and vision to entice them.
Also, Guillem Balague said that on our shortlist, it was between Mata and Downing and we chose Downing, hence we were never in for him. Whose fault that was will no doubt vary whoever you speak to.

I remember that too. Mata or his dad actually said he turned down Tottenham and Arsenal primarily because of Villas Boas. If Rafa was in charge, I'm very certain Mata would have been playing for us now. But Rafa made his mistakes and was rightfully given the chopOriginally posted by Phoenix06 View PostWe didn't even try for him. kenny wanted a winger. mata isnt a wide player so he didnt fit the bill.
mata is an exceptionally gifted footballer and with respect if was playing with our strikers he would have zero assists as well for all the piss easy chances they keep missing.
seriously downing is unlucky not to have over ten assists this season because of really **** finishing.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

That was clearly the thinking, and yet as often as not, we play Downing on the opposite side so that he cuts inside. Baffling really. Someone of Mata's quality gets into your side, no matter what position he plays. He would have been ideal for us. We all saw it, but Kenny chose to pursue Downing. Decisions like that haven't helped his cause really have they.Originally posted by el matador View Postkenny wanted a winger. mata isnt a wide player so he didnt fit the bill.

we clearly had a buy british policy. we bought players who'd been statistically effective in the prem on the misguided assumption that this means they'd be certain successes.
whilst they've been basically **** value for money and taken this season to bed in, i expect every one of them to get better over the next 2 or 3 season. carroll and henderson in particular.

You don't ask you don't get. And there is no evidence we asked for these players. Liverpool is still a massive draw and players like Hazard are in our reach. We just need to go the extra mile to get them.Originally posted by Daniel 7 View PostThe way you throw names about is assuming that any of the players involved would want to join us."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Spot on Tee. Rafa proved that when signing Torres who year on year turned big teams down. He went out of his way and peronally called Torres and spoke to himOriginally posted by Tee View PostYou don't ask you don't get. And there is no evidence we asked for these players. When Rafa got Torres here we were one of the most feared sides in the CL (not the EPL), he built us into a european superteam, the likes of Barca and Real did not want to draw us.Originally posted by saj View PostSpot on Tee. We're nowhere near that level now and yes, we still have a big name but its all about european football these days, and we're in the europa.

Yes we are in the Europa, but if we demonstrate our ambition by making such signings, we are a very easy sell. Hell, even without Europe for a season we could attract big names as long as we show genuine ambition."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley
