Phil Thompson:But in an interview with Sky Sports News HD, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson explained why he would like to see ex-Monaco and Juventus boss Didier Deschamps take the reins...

"The word is that the owners always wanted a new, younger man and I just hope he is given time because I don't want us to be one of these clubs who keep chopping and changing their manager.

"The owners might want young, but I think someone like Didier Deschamps would be the right fit. He has played at the top level [captaining France to the World Cup in 1998] and managed at a high level.

"There are up-and-coming managers who have done well in the Premier League - Roberto Martinez, Paul Lambert and Brendan Rodgers. They have been respectful in their interviews and handled the media well, but footballing-wise I think it might be a bit early for them.

"Andre Villas-Boas has been mentioned but it might be too soon after Chelsea, while it would be very difficult for Rafa Benitez to come back. He did well before and would love the opportunity to come back - but sometimes you have to start afresh.

"But who is going to make the decision? Do the owners know enough about Premier League football? I don't know. A lot of the burden will be on [managing director] Ian Ayre and he might have to make that important call.

"Whoever it is, though, the new manager will need a fair crack, because Roy Hodgsonlasting six months and Kenny lasting 16 is not enough time.sky

Yep, and that's from someone who 'understands' premiership football apparently. Frightening really.

Great article / interview with AVB. I would loooove us to play that way and feel that Gerrard/ Lucas/ Suarez would utterly thrive in that system. But can you imagine Andy Carroll in it? Or Spearing? Could Henderson grow into it ( he seems most likely)? Ramires and Mikel were the lynch pins of AVB's time at Chelsea because they could play this way. Torres struggles with this style, even in the Spain set up ( whereas Villa thrives). Lampard and Drogba not great at this at all, far more direct.

AVB interview describes the essence of crafty continental football where you get more time on the ball and fewer tackles. If you can't keep the ball away, you get punched on the counter in England. Personally, I would love to see us playing this style because it would mean we have new technically gifted players; Silva/Modric types who can control the ball. It is not the only way to win, but it is pretty. If we could get a Falcao in, a Lucas Moura, and a continental #10, it would really help. We need technically gifted players desperately.

I dont think Deschamps is that radical a suggestion, Marseilles first title in 18 years, runners up last season, 3 cup wins. Won Serie B with Juve. Cup win at Monaco and League and CL runners up at just 43 years old. Dont want him mind and theyve had a woeful season but theres been plenty worse suggested.

I actually quite like him. I'm not saying I'd be overjoyed if we went for him, but I could see some logic to it should certain other more obvious choices be out of the question.

Suggested Deschamps myself earlier in the thread IMO he's be a good option.

For me in no particular order:

                            - Rikjaard
                            - Deschamps
                            - AVB
                            - De Boer

If that happened you'd need to take mob with you because one man couldn't slap enough sense into them on his own.
