It was a master stroke yes, but unless we know what other offers Rafa had at that time, how much of it was down to Parry's persuasion and the clubs standing at the time is debateable.

He'd fallen out with the Valencia board or part of it, so was maybe always going to leave that season.

Can't remember if he had other offers at that time tbh.

I still have a nagging feeling that Maureen was our first choice, but he went to the money.

Didn't Parry always claim Mourinho & Rafa were neck and neck until Mourinho went sprinting down the touchline at OT? Parry said it wasn't the sort of behaviour expected of a Liverpool manager and decided on Rafa. No?

With hindsight that was a bit of a masterstroke by Parry to get Rafa in the first place (his only one!), him and Mourinho were the two outstanding up and coming managers in European football at the time. He was above our level at that particular time really.

I guess you could equate it to bringing in Klopp now, which seems virtually impossible.

Essentially we’ve somehow regressed since 2004, and I remember thinking we were in a bit of a mess even back then!

Just words though, spoken after the event, to maybe make out that by the time we hired Rafa and Jose went to Chavski, we had already decided on Rafa ?

Whilst the team has not progressed ideally in the past couple of years, lets not forget that the general standard of the league has also risen quite a bit int he past five years. the premierleague is the most watched football league in the world and this has led to increased investment which has imo pushed up the ability of your average prem player. Teams like Norwich and Wigan can on their days take points off anybody but in particular the standard of player playing for the middle to uefa cup placed teams has risen imo, the Cisses, Cabayes, VDV's Adebayors, Modrics etc.

The top sides arent as good as they were 3 seasons ago, although there's no denying that there's no margin for error in getting in the top 4 nowadays with the improvement of Spuds & emergence of Citeh.

I've heard it's going to be Brendan Rodgers.

Comes from a conversation on a Golf course involving himself and two other well known ex footballers one of whom is known personally and so confident it's true has lumped a monkey on it..

I didn't make it up and it's probably bollocks but no more bollocks than any other bollocks on here.

What pisses me off hearing Parry talking about setting a crtieria, knowing what type of manager they wanted etc, is why the hell didn't he do the same when selling the damn club!

He's coming across like they were soooo meticulous and clever.

Still think he just got lucky with Rafa, right man at the right time and available, bit like when we bought Suarez, great player that just seemed to be under everyones radar, for some reason.

Could be doing Parry a great disservice, but the mess they made of selling the club, and the decade that's set us back, maybe longer! irks.

I thought we were chasing Maureen as well as Rafa, more or less right up untill Maureen agreed to join Chavs.

If I remember rightly Rafa met Moores and Parry at Moores holiday home in Marbella in the March (they sacked Houllier in May)

He was offerred the job shortly after that meeting
