        Am I reading the odds in the first post correctly, is Martinez the odds-on favourite? A manager who's managerial reputation is based largely on the last 8 games his club have played? A manager who has no experience of managing a top club with top players? Insanity if you ask me. Sheer insanity.

        Like Shaggy said above, there is no manager who could unite the fans, the only one was Kenny and the yanks have sacked him now. The two outstanding coaches working today are Guardiola and Mourinho, and only Guardiola would come close to having the full, unqualified support of the fans; even Mourinho with his pedigree and record would be met with suspicion by some of us, myself included. But Guardiola is a pipe dream.

        For me the best man out there who would take the job is Rafa, and at least he would get the backing of the majority of us, even if a minority of fans would be against him, as there would be with any other appointment excpet Guardiola.

            Ayre said that they are going to draw up a list of the things they are looking for in a new manager, and appoint the one who's the best fit. What would be on that list?

            * Experience of winning league titles
            * Experience of winning european competition
            * Vested interest in developing the youth team
            * Premiership experience preferable
            * Good age (younger than 60)
            * Happy to work with a director of football

            Now that's pretty much the ultimate list, and Rafa ticks every single one of those boxes bar 1 - and surely that's an obstacle which can be overcome. Whats more, he's available on a free, knows the club inside out and would walk into this mess and hit the ground running. No one else comes close in my opinion.

                  I dont get where all the thinking about Rafa uniting us comes from

                  Its like people have forgotten the ill feeling towards the end of his tenure

                  I think he'd divide fans more than anyone!

                  I'd have him back in a heartbeat, personally speaking; but I dont think that is how all or most Liverpool fans feel at all

                        This is one of the reasons why I'm ambivalent/undecided about Rafa

                            Yep, that he doesn't speak English and key to his MO are long, very long tactical speeches with the whole group, and shorter one-to-one tactical discussions with individual players. Couldn't get his crazy ideas across in any language other than Spanish.

                              Van Gaal would stack up pretty well. I think Klopp would score highly based on him being an outstanding prospect. Capello.

                              Obviously no one is going to meet everything the owners are looking for. But Benitez should certainly be considered.
