I'd want him to shave his goatee off though. Looks like a crook with it. Pre-goatee, he looked the business and proper serious.

It would be a good strategy. Rafa lovers get their man and don't care how, sceptics are scared by talk of Rodgers into accepting Rafa is the man with the best cv following an objective process.

I agree it's not so ridiculous. If they'd steamed in and appointed Rafa, they'd leave themselves open to all sorts of stick. If by going through a painstaking process - either actually going through one or pretending to go through one - then they can say "we've been thorough and he is the best man for the job"...or summat

It's still massively unlikely IMO but not really all that far-fetched.

Hmmm, how about this for an idea...

Rafa and Martinez partnership. They are known to be good friends both in and out of football, share a similar philosophy on the game and FSG would get the safe bet in Martinez with the fans favourite in Benitez. If the partnership doesn't work they can drop whichever of the two they find a problem with and retain the other. Possibly on a trial basis. I know it sounds odd but I don't think it's a completely impossible scenario.

I believe nothing that Gunga Din ever says.

i did mention that my dream would be rafa as DoF, with martinez as the pitch side coach. rafa could do his assessments and stratergy thing, without getting dragged into slanging matches with the press, etc. best of both worlds.

I dont want more seasons of 1 striker up front. Doubt they'll make a choice till halfway through june anyway.

Because his track record is 100% wrong. Every single time.

Sky sources understand Roberto Martinez is to meet with Liverpool's owners in the next 36 hours to discuss their managerial vacancy.

The Anfield outfit have been searching for a new manager for just over a week following the shock decision to sack club legend Kenny Dalglish.

The Reds were granted permission to speak with the Spaniard soon after Dalglish departed, but as yet have been unable to do so as he is on holiday in Barbados.

John W Henry and his Fenway Sports Group colleagues are now due to hold talks with Martinez as they look to narrow down a field of candidates which initially held as many as 12 names.

                          Deadline

Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers and Ajax manager Frank De Boer have already moved to distance themselves from the vacancy, while Marseille's Didier Deschamps and Jurgen Klopp of Borussia Dortmund have no plans to leave their current posts.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan claimed earlier on Thursday that he would set Martinez a deadline of seven days from Tuesday to make a decision as to where his future lies.

The 38-year-old has also been mentioned as a contender for the Aston Villa vacancy, but turned down the opportunity to take over at the midlands last summer to stay with Wigan.

He oversaw an impressive end to the campaign with the Latics, which included memorable victories over Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool to avoid relegation by seven points.

I'm wondering if the LVG aspect really has any legs. What happened to the Tixi fella who was considered with a shout for the DOF roll?

Since the LVG camp made noises he seemed to become nailed on for DOF whilst, it's actually only taken a couple of days for his team to now announce he's actually more interested in the manager role.
