But no, you're not alone, Elephant Man and Bob the Charmer (kinda) are with you. Question: what have Barca's philosophy set up to get teams like?

PS: Rafa came from that completely different league.

Yes it's true Rafa did come from that league and barca beat many tems in Europe from other leagues.

I think we would basically become like arsenal though.
Lacking in true quality players so therefore good but not quite good enough.
He would never come here anyway.

When you hear that and you are aware that this guy won CL and La Liga etc and most importantly he is available and indications are that he wants the job, why are we wasting our time on Rodgers or Martinez of this world?
Possibly because what is important to FSG is the long term - if we want to implement a philosophy at the club we can't rely on one person. It is quite possible our plan all along has been van Gaal with a young first team coach/team manager. Perhaps the definition of the roles has been the issue - the likes of Martinez and Rodgers seen as the most suitable managerial style candidates with a bunch of lower profile coaches considered alongside them?

If I were Martinez I would definitely consider working under van Gaal as a worthwhile experience. I think he'd be a good fit stylistically. I appreciate though that van Gaal is not likely to be an easy man to work under.

I like the idea of van Gaal but there are obviously issues around his appointment. It would be exciting to look to implement his style/philosophy though.

Roberto Martinez doing a Wigan press conference on Tuesday.

Wigan are set to hold a press conference on Tuesday where Roberto Martinez will announce his future plans, it is understood.

Martinez has been heavily linked with the vacancy at Liverpool and is expected to reveal next week whether he will stay with the Latics or leave.

It is understood the 38-year-old met the Reds' owners in Miami this week to discuss the managerial vacancy and was not put off by the huge rebuilding job at Anfield.

However, it is understood Martinez has not made his mind up completely whether to accept that challenge and has given himself until Tuesday to do so.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan claimed on Friday the Spaniard had received an offer from Liverpool's principal owner John Henry after their meeting in Miami on Thursday.

Doubts emerged over Whelan's interpretation of the situation, with the Reds refusing to comment amid the general belief no formal offer had been made.

I really hope it's to announce he's staying there, but I doubt it.

We are probably the first English club being grabbed by the b*llocks and being dragged into the new millenium. This is how large successful teams operate in Europe. Yet again, our own fanbase are dragging us back to the dark ages.
              Well said.

What elevates the English league is money, we always marvel at how brilliant some of the Spanish and Portuguese sides are on a shoestring budget. Maybe there's the answer

Cant believe I've read posts questioning pep guardiolas ability as a manager, 14 trophies out of a possible 19 is simply amazing, in fact it's right up there with Sir Bobs 20 in 9 seasons! He didnt win the league or CL this season but then the squad there was pretty small and losing a player like Villa for Half a season will not have made it easy.

Doubt there is any chance of him coming but any remote chance we should do everything to convince him

On the Contrary I doubt he'd be holding a conference to announce he is leaving. Tuesday will be an interesting day but if we don't hear anything from Liverpool before Wigan's press conference then I'd put money on Martinez staying put. You'd expect Liverpool to be the first to unveil Martinez as our manager not the other way round. The fact that the Echo and Barrett for example have consistently said that we intend to interview other candidates makes it even more premature that Martinez will announce he is leaving.

He took over a brilliant team with many of the best players in the world and made them more brilliant. I really don't think that is experience that proves he can make us successful.

He's proven he's been the best manager in the world for the past 4 years and take a side that were good and made them great, perhaps the best club side ever.

There is no guarantees anyone will do a good job with us, all you can do is look at a managers record where they have been previously and his record is simply amazing. Why do you think Rafa was appointed ? Might have been down to how he did with Valencia, many say it was Hector Cupers side he did it with but he still had to turn them into winners

I was speaking to a bloke who is a cameraman for BBC Northwest yesterday afternoon

He said he'd been put on standby for a press conference at Anfield this coming week

Well he actually said "Martinez's press conference at Anfield"

How much of that is guesswork we'll see. I can believe the first part about being on standby but think the latter is guesswork at least I hope it is

Or perhaps the Mail is just making it up based on throw-away comments from Dave Whelan
