    Goals

My worry with this squad is that there aren't enough players capable of getting goals, yesterday again we looked toothless, we had chances but we didn't take them. We have also lost players in the summer that were capable of getting goals.

These are our top scorers in the league last season and the number of Premiership goals they got:

    Suarez.......11
    Bellamy........6
    Gerrard........5
    OG..............5
    Carroll..........4
    Maxi............4
Adam, Henderson, Kuyt & Skrtel 2 each
Agger, Coates, Johnson & Shelvey 1 each

That's a total of 47 goals typically you will need at least 60 to make the top 4the loss of Bellamy, Maxi and Kuyt reduces that total by 12, Assaidi and Borini got 10 and 9 goals for their previous clubs last season so they should hopefully be able to cover for the goals that would have been provided by Maxi, Kuyt and Bellamy, Allan isn't going to chip in with anymore goals than the players he's replaced (Henderson/Adam).

You would hope that Gerrard and Suarez could get more goals than last year if they can stay fit, I'd hope to see Suarez hit 20 league goals but I'm not sure how likely that is, perhaps 15 is a more realistic target. Gerrard's total very much depends on what position he plays and how many penalties he takes but I would hope he could make ~12. Beyond those two though I'm not confident that anyone else will reach double figures, which is very worrying as an injury to one of those could leave us in real trouble.

These are what I would hope (optimistically that) players would get in terms of goals the values in brackets are what I think is probably more realistic
    Suarez....20 (15)
    Gerrard...12 (10)
    Borini......10 (7)
    Assaidi....10 (7)
    Carroll......7 (5)
    Downing...5 (3)
    Allen/Lucas/Henderson/Shelvey...10 (6) between then
    Johnson/Enrique/Agger/Skrtel...12 (6) between them

That optimistically gives a total of 86 and realistically* gives a total of 59 both assuming no injuries.

    * realistic values still expect some players (Carroll and Downing) to improve on their form last season despite the fact they will probably play less
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

We all want Luis Suarez to start banging them in on a regular basis. But that doesn't look likely.

To get 4th we need to win games. To win games we need to score goals. Simple really.

So we have a problem. Our main striker will not score on a regular basis. Our support players will not score on a regular basis.

Solution? Sign a player to play central who will get goals. Even someone like Darren Bent would do, though I'd hope for better. Then play Suarez out wide.

I think Suarez out wide would still get 15 league goals. Put a player central capable of 15+ league goals and straight away we are looking better.

We don't lose the creativity of Suarez, but we gain goals. I'd still suggest we signed a mobile striker capable of drifting out wide if possible - we still need a system of sorts.
    Forwards.......

I doubt Gerrard will be prolific this season, OG won't score as many, Bellamy certainly won't. We need a proven goalscorer at their peak, if we don't buy a proper striker then it looks likely we'll battling to be in the top eight again. On a positive note I'm sure that the manager realises this.

surely there is a striker out there who we can get even someone who will not finish top scorer in the prem but get maybe 20 odd goals would love to see some realistic targets
Oh I say his vision there was lovely

          .
I've been saying for a while Suarez should play one of the wide roles I think that would be the best way to get the most out of him in the English game, playing through the centre he gets crowded out and lumps kicked out of him by the centre backs, play him out wide and he should have more space to play in, if he beats his fullback he's in a good position to either shoot or pull more defenders away leaving space for others in the centre.

I think Clint Dempsey got around 15 in the Prem last season.

steven fletcher 12 goals in 32 in the prem
jermain defoe 18 in 34 in the prem
clint dempsey 17 in 37 in the prem

and thats without looking at cheaper alternatives abroad but all of those players are deemed not good enough by some fans of a team who quite frankly cant hit a barn ****ing door

Definitely need more goalscorers, at least another one has to come in this window whether it's Dempsey or someone else. Theres a wankfest over Sahin and fair enough he's good but even if we get him he still doesn't solve the main issue. Pushing Gerrard alongside Suarez and Borini doesn't solve it either, there would still only be 3 goalscorers in the whole team.

It's a pain in the arse watching the likes of Defoe constantly sniff out goals from nowhere when we cant buy a goal! It's not like him or similar are world beaters, it's just a desire to move, get in the box and score goals.

suarez is one of the best penetrators in world football.

Only messi and neymar are better than him at getting past players but he lacks composure in front of goal so will never be considered a top goal scorer for me anyway.

However, if you can use his brilliance out wide and marry that with a deadly goal scorer all of a sudden youve got a platform to build the rest of the team. downing keeps it solid on the right and suarez on the left. But we need a top quality centre forward because without one we will be exactly where we were last season.

FSG need to stop ****ing around and go and get us a proper striker.

                          Great posts by everyone.

It is a bit staggering that we arent after regular goalscorers.

Ba would have won the game for us yesterday.

We've basically got about 10 days to get in at least one top class goalscorer or we have no chance of getting into the top 4.

Huntelaar and Defoe would be good. Big loss missing out on Jelavic at £5m but there are goalscorers out there. FSG need to provide the funds and stop pissing about if they're serious about 'returning LFC to top position in England & Europe' as said many times by Tom and John.

I've seen a couple of people mention that FSG should have us in for a striker is it them or Rodgers that hasn't wanted to bring a striker in so far? Rodgers system seems to suggest he would like Suarez to play the central role, he seems to have the qualities Rodgers wants from that role, a point also highlighted by Carroll apparently not fitting the system. With what we have at the moment I would go with Borini or Carroll as the central striker with Suarez on one side. If we ship Carroll out and bring someone better in great, but as things stand he needs to be involved he is as capable of doing a job as some of the other squad members. He is one of a few players who if picked regularly could score a decent number of goals and that is what we need, if he stays people need to get over the fee, he was never going to be a £35m player but at the moment we have to work with what we have and there is no point isolating him.
