My thoughts exactly but then I'm one of those old gits he was referring to...

Suarez’s near-misses fitted into a wider pattern at Liverpool. They came eighth, their worst finish in over half a century, yet in the top five leagues in Europe, only Barcelona had a greater proportion of their play in the attacking third of the pitch. In only five of the 38 games did Liverpool have fewer shots than their opponents. Only three teams had more shots on goal than Liverpool last season. All of this suggests that, for all the criticism of their style of play, the issue was chance conversion: Liverpool missed five of their six penalties and hit the woodwork a total of 33 times.

It's quite an interesting statistic and suggests maybe we weren't as bad as our league position suggested.

In that case Downing should have been a world-beater. He had highest crosses for Villa and stats that were brilliant.

It is an interesting statistic, but we were shockingly porr with our chance conversion. I'm sure eventually it'll all click into place. Quite excited about giving the youngster a chance. I think it might just be the missing link.

Only superficially imo. Average conversion from Downing's chances was around 5%. His career averages are very mediocre.

Tipp, what that doesn't show is the quality of chances, the fact that Suarez was the best creator for Suarez was a problem and a lot of our chances were not as easy as made out.
You cannot put our horrific run after new year down to bad luck. We lacked intelligence, guile and any more dimensions to our play.

It's a prediction thread on a wish list.

Matt, I don't think you can put all the blame on Downing's shoulders if only 1 in 20 of the chances he created were missed! No wonder the lad's confidence is in tatters when he constantly gets knocked by his own team's followers as well as other clubs' fans. Some of the stick I hear him getting inside the ground is embarrassing.

I don't put all the blame on his shoulders mate. He is not responsible for us buying him, but he should never have been bought by us in the first place imo, especially at such a price. He is clearly not the root of the problems we have in our team, but he is a part the issues we have had.

I was optimistic when he took over, but it all comes down to the quality of the players he brings in, not so much the tactics he employs. I am getting a bit fed up hearing things like “we have to give Brendan a year for his footballing philosophy to take hold”, like we have spent the past 30 years following the crazy gang.

Dalglish liked a high tempo pass and move game, but apparently that was something of a dinosaur because he liked a more contemporary 442. As far as I can see the only real difference is now we are pressing a bit higher up the pitch. We may have a different defensive line, but I always though the pace of your defenders should determine how far up the pitch you should push, not an all encompassing tactic. Its all bollocks anyway, because no matter what anyone says or does, its scoring goals that wins games.

When Rafa came in, he said he did not want a big money striker, as you are risking all of your eggs in one basket if they get injured. Only it wasn’t until he had Torres that we had the likes of Real Madrid and ManUre running scared, that we were no longer needing to ride our luck, and were in a position of strength to win things. Obviously things turned to ****, but while Torres was on the pitch, you felt we could always snatch something.

When Dalglish came in, we were playing some beautiful football, and many of us had high hopes. But he bought poorly, and suffered because of it. The players could not gel, and Dalglish had to go. But it could have been different. We were getting lots of chances. A bit more luck, and things could have been different. Other players may have been a bit more confident, more relaxed. Dalglish paid the price because we could not score goals. I think pretty much everyone will acknowledge that.

So coming into the new season, the management and owners decide to try Rodgers out, but they must have had a checklist of things to do. Reduce payroll… check, sell overpaid underachieving striker… check, sell overpaid underachieving winger… raincheck, and ooh, find someone to score goals… **** it.

Whether its Rush Fowler Owen or Torres, if you have a decent goal scorer, you will win games. Even a Crouch, Cisse or Baros will hit the back of the net on occasion. Rodgers is in a very difficult position with the fixture list, because a poor start will leave some of the players feeling negative, with a lack of confidence, and it can be hard to get that back. And if we are flirting with relegation come Christmas time, he is may not be given time to carry his vision through, which would be a shame. For me, Rodgers has to share some of the blame with FSG. He should have made a striker his number one priority, if only to give him some breathing room.

If we were that hardup we should have sold Suarez, and used that cash to find a decent goal scorer, because I have yet to see someone just develop into a great goalscorer through a few months of coaching. It is an instinct that they had from a youth that’s followed them through, and with a 4-5-1 you only have one space for a striker anyway. If he could score half his chances, he would be talked about in the same breath as Ronaldo.
In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.
