The following statement has been issued on behalf of Steven Gerrard:

The courage and dignity shown by the Hillsborough families and survivors is an example to all of us.

For 23 years they have fought for truth and justice on behalf of the victims and survivors of this terrible tragedy and all Liverpool supporters.

Victims and survivors suffered not just on April 15, 1989 in Sheffield, but for over two decades afterwards with the shameful slandering of their actions by people who abused their position and power.

Speaking as someone whose family directly suffered, I know the pain and hurt will remain.

However, I hope that today's report helps bring some comfort, now that everyone knows what happened on that day.

    STEVEN GERRARD

Not sure what to say really, RS4.

Just thoughts and wishes to the families and everyone affected by all this.

Totally agree mate. Should never have happened. I wasn't there, nor am I from Liverpool, but 23 years on i'm still saddened to the point of tears whenever I see or read about that horrible day. RIP yhe 96 and my thoughts are with families and loved ones.

Then they lied about it. Then they blamed the friends and family of those dead.

Testing the blood for alcohol of the children who died is worse IMO.

I was one of the very lucky ones who were stretchered off early after being resuscitated by two of the SYP junior officers. In fact I'm sure one of them was the fella interviewed on the BBC the other night although I can't be certain of much from that day.

Unfortunately my mate Alan "Mally" Johnston was not so lucky. We were together until we were separated as we entered pen B along with another mate who I later discovered had climbed over into pen C. Mally and I were both missing for hours; I had been taken to the Northern General hospital in a 'Black Maria' (there weren't enough ambulances) but he was found around 11pm among the dead bodies in the gym back at Hillsborough.

Twelve of us left to watch a football match together that day but only eleven of us came back. And for 23 years we've been told it was our fault and we murdered our own fans. I think I'll go home early today and raise a glass for the 96 as I'm in bits here in work.

Can't believe only 14 victims (deceased) made it to hospital. Even when the scale of the disaster became clear the police stood around (under orders) and did nothing. Only one ambulance made it onto the pitch FFS. Absolutely criminal and Duckenfield should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law (if hes still alive).

Hope today's findings have at least provided you with some solace RS4, the truth is out there finally, now it's time for justice.

Justice means so many different things to different people including accountability for those who were responsible, being exonerated or simply just receiving an apology. Others like Margaret Aspinall, Anne Williams and Trevor and Jenni Hicks might say justice is finding out what really happened to their teenage sons and daughters and finally being able to grieve properly.

Many people will thankfully feel a sense of justice and some closure today and others will continue to fight for what they believe justice means. I know we sing about justice for the 96 but there are thousands of us who are seeking our own personal justice in whatever form that takes.
There is a light that never goes out. RIP Alan "Mally" Johnston and the 96. YNWA.
