There have been two inquests, they are judicial inquiries with a judge and jury in this case. It costs what it costs, and the outcome and the wider significance of the outcome is worth every penny. This was about establishing the truth of what happened and explaining why it happened. If there are criminal prosecutions then the people involved will need further representation.

I agree it's a lot of money, but it has to be a robust process. However much it costs so be it, but SYP considerably slowed down the inquest unnecessarily using public money and for me I think that their defence budget should absolutely be a finite pot. They wasted time and money defending themselves during an inquest when that money would have been better used defending them when they're up before the criminal courts. Let them pay for their own defence now.

I don't disagree with that, but it is perceived that they wasted a lot of time and money unnecessarily during the process which might explain why their Chief Constable was suspended. It doesn't matter now anyway, but I would argue that as they've spent so much money defending themselves during the inquest then they should have limited funds available for any future proceedings against them.

The inquest was due to last 6 months. The previous report put to bed fan behaviour and other things in which the SYP apologised for at the time. Now they go back on that and bring it all up again to deflect blame and causing this inquest to last over 2 years whilst the families have to listen to their bile and say nothing in case the inquest collapses. It's avoidable costs.

Also worth noting anyone who gets legal aid then found guilty. The cost of representation is liable and recouped if possible.

Just doesnt sit right. Not commenting if it should/should not happen.
Andy Burnham said the same yesterday, specifically in a public interest case of this nature both sides should have access to similar levels of representation. If they don't? Well, the entire game is rigged from the start.

You get the feeling from all sides of parliament that this will be a landmark case.

Just watched Andy Burnhams speech in the er ****, whats it called I don't follow politics....house of commons? minds gone blank

anyway what a truly passionate, brilliant and powerful speech that was. I bet you that made some ****s out there really ****ing squirm.

I was thinking about it all last night - I'm amazed at the odd comments you see - on twitter, on facebook (thankfully none from friends) - just dickheads popping up with the usual - the fans have to take blame, what about heysel, always the victims etc etc etc

it just baffles me - this disaster, in the same bad circumstances, could have happened at a U2 concert, at Twickenham, at Wimbledon, at a festival, etc etc - just put the football fans and football rivalry aside and look at the basics

                  96 people died

there was a clear cover up by the police and the establishment to protect themselves

a smear campaign in the media to deflect blame from the police and the establishment.

It's taken 27 years for the cover up to be fully exposed

Which includes the longest legal proceedings ever in this country, lasting two years!!

for me, every single person in the country, regardless of team they support, location, wealth, race, religion whatever - should be disgusted in the cover up and smear campaign, shocked at how long this has taken, and thankful that finally it's been exposed because ultimately moving forward as a society, for me it can only be good for everyone.

Now, that is properly the most political thing I've ever said or felt. As you can see with my house of commons or is it house of lords - I'm not one to ever get involved in that sort of talk! - but my god it ****ing frustrates me how some people can't see it like that

Anyone who brings up Heysel is just ****ing ignorant, stupid or just a dickhead

The people who caused Heysel were held accountable and served time for their crimes

Nobody has been held accountable for Hillsborough yet

I've been a little shocked by how unified the support has been for this.

Fans of other teams have been unanimous in support of the families (in my experience) and even non football fans have been expressing sympathy and support for this.

Maybe it's because I got rid of any element on social media that might mock it plus I haven't looked for any opposing views either.

There have been a few idiots on social media with the usual tired old comments about Heysel and victims and that crap

I noted yesterday one particular nasty individual on Facebook making comments and today the company he works for suspended him and have just dismissed him

                              Fair play to them.
