Was the Suarez one a penalty mate? There was a bit of contact but never enough to bring him down if he didn't want to be taken down. I can't see what the solution is as there's a muddy area where proof of how much contact is needed can't be decided. The only solution is to award a penalty for all contact and yes that sucks. Thinking of solutions where it'd be better to encourage players to continue but can't think of anything sensibleOriginally posted by Shaggy View PostI absolutely despair at the fact it has become accepted in the game and even among fans that "contact" is all that's required for a penalty to be given. What has this game become? Touching someone, putting your hand on someone's back, whatever, is not a foul. It is a contact sport. There was no foul by Johnson, none at all. Valencia dived, he cheated. He splayed his legs outwards in attempt to con the referee into thinking he'd somehow been fouled. And it worked.

Yep Evans fouled him. An actual foul. It was a foul in the 70s and it's a foul now. Johnson didn't foul Valencia.Originally posted by Norbert Dentressangle View PostWas the Suarez one a penalty mate? At the end of the day, the ref gave the pen because of the slide tackle and not the other slightly more justifiable reasons. Valencia takes a dive just as the slide comes in. There's no way he would have seen the slight ankle contact. They're a bunch of ****ing cheats.Originally posted by barnes10 View PostAs Neville said on sunday, Johnson caught his right foot as he came around him before he even slid in. Add to that glen's right hand on his lower back/waist - you can see valencia's shirt become taut as it happens. That shows there was contact there too.
Perhaps Valencia was cute to sense it but if my ankle was tapped and then there was a hand pushing my back I'd be pretty retarded to not notice and not expect a challenge to come in. I'd then make the most of it to make sure I got a match winning penalty out of it (without flinging my head back and arms up in the air like our own diver). Its a bit lame to say it was never a penalty I think.
Some you win, some you lose.

I agree on that one. Halsey's interpretation of the red card challenge will have been influenced by the robust challenge on Giggs immediately before it.Originally posted by Norbert Dentressangle View PostI'm also coming around to the idea that the Shelvey sending off also had something to do with the challenge he made a second or so before the one on Evans. He was getting pretty involved and the two challenges compounded his decisionNever knowingly optimistic

If that was relevant then he should have got a yellow for persistent fouling.
Halsey mishandled the whole situation..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

I'm not sure how we are gauging the force of the contact of glens right hand and valencia's back to be honest. How is it possible to conclude it was a touch not a push?
If that's inconclusive it begs the question of why glen would stick his right arm out and put his hand on Valencia's lower back, possibly grabbing the shirt (that's what it looks like). i don't think this is a case of 'any contact is a foul', I think its a case of glen pushing him in the back. You're left with 'he didn't push him that hard'.

By watching all angles it's nothing but the dive to me.Originally posted by Nigey View PostThis is not conclusive at all. Look at Glen's hands.
Push on the back did or didn't happen but Valencia fell as it was due to leg contact which definitely didn't happen.
Ref showed no consistency whatsoever.
There was one challenge on Agger in the first half and one on Suarez in the second half that were not called and they were as much as penalties as the one Halsey did call.Last edited by Mostar; 25-09-12, 10:47 AM.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

The inconsitency is true, but that doesn't mean the Johnson one wasn't a penalty.Originally posted by Mostar View PostBy watching all angles it's nothing but the dive to me.
