The Reds skipper is struggling with illness and won’t travel with the squad when they fly to Italy today.

Gerrard hadn’t featured in the two previous away games in Group A but was expected to have a prominent role to play against the Serie A side and will be sorely missed.

Lucas Leiva and Daniel Agger will be the other notable absentees as Brendan Rodgers’ side look to secure the victory they need to guarantee their passage to the knockout stages at the Stadio Friuli.

Lucas made an impressive return to action against Southampton last weekend after three months out with a thigh injury. The Brazil midfielder came through unscathed but after such a long absence Liverpool have decided he would be better served resting ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to West Ham.

Similarly, Agger won’t be risked as the Reds continue to manage his game-time. The Danish centre-back has started 13 successive league matches – the best run of his seven-year Anfield career.

However, key to that sequence has been giving him plenty of recovery time with Anzhi at home the only Europa League group game he has been involved in.

Aside from Gerrard, Lucas and Agger, the Reds will be at full strength with Luis Suarez set to make his first European away appearance for the club.

Either that or a polite way of saying thanks but no thanks Stevie. And he gets to keep face as he's not officially dropped? Just a thought.

I read somewhere that Udinese were out, are we sure they are still in this ?, would totally change the complexion of the game if they had no chance of qualification

According to ESPN's website Chelsea finished 2nd but I just read that they are out. I believe that Udinese are out regardless of what happens but I'd rather here it from an expert.

I'm pretty sure if Udinese beat us by a margin of 3 or more and Young Boys lose, they're in and we're out.

Udinese Calcio are out, but can take Liverpool FC down with them in their final Group A game, with the Reds seeking to deny BSC Young Boys a UEFA Europa League round ...

                    Thats from UFEA.COM

Udinese cannot go through because whatever the two match results are they could only match Young Boys points at best which would mean Young Boys go through as they beat Udinese twice.

If we draw and young boys win, we finish 3rd on 8 points. Are you suggesting 3rd place in our group gos through?

Are we totally ruling out the possibility of Anzhi fielding a weakened team and Young Boys getting something from their game?

If we lose by three and Young Boys win, we finish last.
Ah, if we lose, and Young Boys lose, Udinese go through on head to heads.
If we lose and Young Boys lose, we go through.
If we draw and Young Boys win we finish third.
If we draw and Young Boys draw/lose we are through.

If we win we are through, regardless of the other result.

I think that about covers it, let's just win, it's good for morale as well. Udinese will be counting on Anzhi to win their game and will go all out to win, it's going to be a difficult game, and our manager has little or no experience in Europe.

Is it only head to heads in the CL then?

to be honest mate, I really do not know but I am guessing UFEA.com would not print it, if they were not out, think its got to do with results rather than GD
