This is begging for a PTP style first 11 from those 2 teams....

How about that

obvs - the formation/set up above was purely for illustration purposes

Mignolet/Reina - two top class keepers - hard to make that work but for the purpose of this post it does

defence
johnson fit on form/cover from flanno - arbeloa also cover right back but would be pushing enrique for lb - at centre half, a younger carra/skrtel/agger/sakho pretty much sorts that out.

midfield - starting three would clearly be Mascherano/alonso/gerrard - but we'd have sufficient cover for each of those roles in Hendo/Lucas/Maxi

then the attacking options - where the magic will happen

the front three starting would usually be Sturridge/Suarez/Torres - just all interchanging and creating havoc - but you then have cover for the front three

Kuyt - work rate/passion/heart
Coutinho - skill/guile/creativity
Sterling - pace/skill/quality -

that would be a 22 man squad capable of winning the league and dominating europe.

Manager the Bren dog - but just a little touch of Rafa's experience and tactical set up/nouse for those tough european games

Finnan - yeah i liked finnan - but i'd say johnson on form is better, and flanagan and arbeloa give us plenty of cover.

Yossi - doesn't quite make it, Coutinho does that role, is younger/better and i'm quite happy with maxi as another option

Momo - loved momo, but i'd say hendo has more potential.

aurelio - classy left back but made of glass


ideally you want a 25 man squad for the season - so swap Sami in for Skrts - thats 22man, then 3 youngsters....Wisdom/Teix/Ibe to bring us up to the 25 man squad.

all in though - what i would take from this exercise is that for me...at present we are 3 or 4 players away from being top,top, top side

a quality full back
a quality centre mid
an extra attacking threat

and annoyingly we had 3/4 players who are still playing now that would see us sorted...

this current squad - but we'd kept/added Arbeloa, one of mascherano/alonso and torres - and we'd be class

So who would win, Rafa’s second year team with the phenomenal defence (Pepe ) or Rodgers second year team with their free flowing attacking football?

Rafa finished that season having only conceded 25 goals, 7 fewer than we have this year already. Equally though, we’ve already scored 7 more goals than we did that whole season.

personally i'd say overall the 08/09 team looks a bit stronger - purely because of mascher/alonso in midfield, plus a more solid defence, and torres hitting on the break

I don't think any team could keep our current team from scoring, especially over 2 legs
