So disappointed that Morientes was a flop was delighted when we signed him

With hindsight though his goal stats were not that impressive. He was playing fairly regularly for Real Madrid, a team who normally dominated opponents and created quite a lot of chances. He should really have been a 1 in every 2 striker in that environment so maybe we sholuldn't be too surprised at how he did with us.

Coutinho saying his goodbyes at Inter today. He doesn't get back (apparently) til tomorrow so surely he won't feature at all v City.

Vickery has a very good track record. Him and Marcotti are always orth listening. I would say Vickery is 99/100 correct in his opinion on players. He never ever gave an insight on Mark Gonzalez as he seems to back away from voicing opinions on players who moved away at a young age and no longer play in South America.

                Yes he did

Why Liverpool have a good deal

                By Tim Vickery
                BBC Sport in South America

In waiting for Mark Gonzalez to recover from a serious knee injury and overcome work permit problems Liverpool have shown great faith in their new signing.

The young Chilean can fill any position down the left flank, from full-back to winger, though his gifts are best suited to an attacking midfield role.

He has an electric burst of pace and an excellent left foot, which means he is very effective on the counter-attack.

It is no coincidence his best games for Chile have come away from home.

With the opposition pushing forward, Gonzalez has exposed them on the break.

He is well capable of getting on the scoresheet, as shown by his record of three goals in 13 caps.

Despite a slight frame he can generate plenty of power to shoot from long range.

He is a threat from free-kicks, and is also adept at arriving at the far post to turn in crosses from the right.

Gonzalez was pitched into the highly competitive atmosphere of South America's World Cup qualifiers when he had only just turned 19.

He proved he could cope, and since then only injury has kept him out of the team. Only a harsh ruling, then, would deny him a work permit for his move to Liverpool.

Chilean players have a reputation for travelling badly.

Gonzalez, though, has already shown that he can adapt to European football.

His club, Albacete, may have been relegated from the Primera Liga, but he came out of the campaign with considerable credit.

Fitting into the Premiership is, of course, a more difficult task.

There is a more physical type of game to get used to, and, of course, the extra pressures that come with playing for a club that is chasing titles.

Everything Mark Gonzalez has done so far would seem to indicate that he is up to the challenge.

I like him anyway, find his insights interesting. I'd seen Gonzalez in Spain and I was mega-excited. Thought he was going to be amazing

Back next week according to the inspirational Pascoe.

New Liverpool signing Philippe Coutinho has the right mentality to succeed at Anfield according to assistant manager Colin Pascoe.

Less than a week ago boss Brendan Rodgers publicly criticised his younger players after their 3-1 FA Cup exit to League One Oldham.

Three days later he signed the 20-year-old Brazilian, who is now on his fourth professional club in three years, for £8.5million.

Critics of the Liverpool 'project' under Rodgers and American owners Fenway Sports Group have argued there is too much emphasis placed on potential when what they need is experience.

The oldest player Rodgers has signed since taking over in June is Oussama Assaidi - and he was only two days past his 24th birthday - and the addition of another youngster raised some eyebrows after Rodgers' recent comments.

But Pascoe said Coutinho was a different prospect.

"He has played a lot of games from a young age," said the Welshman, standing in for Rodgers who was in London attending his son Anton's court case.

"What we have got there is a young talent who has played a lot for Inter Milan and Espanyol.

"He is a young lad but what we have seen of him he can handle this type of pressure and he will be a good asset for us.

"The young lads who have come through have been absolutely brilliant but he has a lot of experience.

"He plays wide left, he can play as a number 10, and he likes to take defenders on and has a great awareness of his team-mates.

"He has to sort a few things out in Milan but he'll be back next week and he'll be ready to start straight away and he will be a great addition to the squad."

Rodgers tried to do his homework on Coutinho by asking the opinion of Reds midfielder Lucas Leiva, his compatriot.

"The manager spoke with me but not to ask about his talents as I think he was sure about that already," the Brazil international told the Liverpool Echo.

"He just wanted to know what I knew about Coutinho as a person. I only had positive things to say."

Despite failing to sign Blackpool winger Tom Ince after a month-long pursuit Pascoe insisted they were satisfied with the business done.

"The targets we wanted we got. With Coutinho and Daniel (Sturridge) coming in it enhances the squad," he added.

"We are very happy with the window."

Pascoe also said they were happy with striker Luis Suarez, who has scored 17 Premier League goals this season, saying he wanted to be at the club for the long term even though the likelihood of playing in the Champions League was a slim one next season.

"It is great news, it is as simple as that," he said.

"He loves Liverpool, loves being here, he signed a new contract in the summer and he is arguably in the best form of his life under Brendan.

"We are glad he signed his contract and he is playing for us."

The Uruguay international has quickly struck up a partnership with Sturridge and Pascoe believes there is plenty more to come from it.

"In training and from the matches you can see them looking for each other to link up," he said.

"Good players will always find half-a yard with their partner and it has been great so far.

"Good players will gel together and Daniel and Luis are good players.

"When they get on the pitch the football takes over and the football brain and football finesse means they gel together."

The thing was - and there was no way that Vickery nor anyone else would know at the time - Gonzales seemed to lose all his pace when he came back from injury and with it, his main threat.

And let's face it Vickery is no more culpable than Benitez in thinking that Gonzales would be the dogs bollocks.

Oh aye - like I said I got him totally wrong too. He was ****ing electric in that season before in Spain though. God what a let down he was - though (and I know what he's done since doesn't suggest it would've been wise to keep him) he's one I would've liked to have kept for another season. We got rid of him real quick.

Gonzalez was very unlucky because he picked up a very bad injury the season prior to joining us and his pace seemed to go.

Not sure if it was a cruciate injury but it was a bad one. Big shame for the player
