Our scouts made a real balls of the Eriksen thing. He did seem to have gone a bit stale at Ajax - a bit like Torres had at Atleti before we signed him - but still. Our scouts decided he wasn't up to it and we went for Luis Alberto instead. Trying to be too clever or what.

Please say that's not true. Fair enough for (incorrectly) thinking Eriksen might not make it in England but which bellend thought that Luis Alberto would be a better option?! Good grief

Oh wait. Unless you're being a cheeky monkey and referring to our other Luis Alberto

Apparently. We definitely scouted Eriksen regularly for at least two years - lots of clubs scouted him but apparently we took more interest in him than anyone, before deciding not to bother. He was available for about £11m (?) and we went for Alberto instead. While it seems clear Eriksen didn't have a load of top clubs fighting over him at the time he went to Spurs, it also looks a bit of a **** up from our scouts.

Yep and at £11m he is looking like a steal.

He did go bit stale at Ajax, but even during that period he looked a bit special and he was probably only 18 or 19 and playing a lot when he had that off form period, so not too dissimilar to our own Sterling in that respect.

We ended up with Luis Alberto for not too much less in price, and got a player that was the same age as Eriksen but who looks years behind him in terms of development. Spurs on the other hand got a player who became their player of the season in his first season and who looks like repeating that again this season.

Even compared to Coutinho, Eriksen looks that bit more developed as a player and that is no knock on our Phil as there are plenty of senior players in attacking roles who would love to have the same level of ability as the 22 yo Eriksen.

To this day I cannot get the logic of buying Alberto when Eriksen was available. Was very obvious which one had more experience and who had played at a higher level back then. Would have loved to have seen Eriksen in the team we had last season.

Well that's quite upsetting. Thanks chaps

I suppose that Alberto cost a lot less, but it seems like being with good reason

                Only £4m less.

11m was always going to be worth a punt, like Marios 16M

Ahh well, if given the choice, I'm sure most on here would have been happy to spunk £30m on Lamela over Eriksen.

Eriksen was a far more experienced player than Lamela at the time (still is) who had stood out at domestic, CL, and International level despite his young age.

If anything the prices paid for the likes of Coutinho and Eriksen showed up Lamela as being hugely overpriced even before a ball was kicked.

Lamela was more experienced a player than Coutinho, albeit not by a massive margin but both lagged behind Eriksen and were both far less proven against better players than Eriksen was in 2013.

Just going by their respective stats for club and country at the time of each of their moves to England, it is actually pretty impressive that Spurs got Eriksen for the price they did and also a bit baffling that they went so high for Lamela.

Was Eriksen's price not so low due to him having just 1 year left on his contract?

I agree with his experience but if I am remembering correctly many thought he had stagnated a little at Ajax and that he might not be the talent everyone was expecting him to become.

Great player though, too good for Spurs.

Pass me the mind bleach please.

Even though Eriksen stalled at Ajax, there was more than enough there to take a punt and still get a very good resale value if it didn't quite work out. We'd signed Coutinho six months before, but they're both different players.

The thing is if you assume wages and agents fees scale with the tranfer fees that could end up being nearly double. Obviously, we made bad decisions in going for Alberto and Aspas though.
