    Is our main problem...

that we don't have a Xabi Sissoko or a Momo Alonso?

Basically we have to play each of them who have obvious strengths but also obvious weaknesses, whereas a world class player could encompass the talents of both players, allowing Gerrard to play in the middle if nescessary.

Alonso - Great passer of the ball and very tactically aware, decent shot
Sissoko - Massive engine, great in the tackle, never relents

If we had a player who could do all of this would that solve a lot of our problems?

We might say we already have that Player in Stevie G, but when we play him in the middle, neither of those players seems to be his ideal partner, so do we just need a decent holding midfielder?

yes in a way, but gerrard is sort of that player that has the attributes you describe, but he's waisted in defending, we need a makalele type to fit him in a two man midfield...
