Why do we never have anyone on the halfway line at corners?

I was just wondering how come when we are defending corners we never seem to leave anyone up field. Chelsea always have one and often two or three. Is this the real weakness of zonal marking that it requires more people to operate correctly meaning that to break you rely on pace and slick passing out of defence (and which our first team is lacking at the minute)?

This has been a problem of ours for a while now. Very rarely do we make a counter attack these days, and if we do it tends to be one man who becomes isolated because of a lack of support and pace and the fact that everyone else is sitting so deep.

If Bellamy is the pitch, you might as well stick up on the half way line when the opposition have a corner, he can't do anything else.

Our set pieces are a disgrace. For years Rafa has let Gerrard take them when he's useless with a dead ball. Even now he's started to let others take them, Gerrard doesn't get into the box. Why? He's the best attacker of the ball in the air we have. Its almost as though Rafa & the coaching staff let the players do as they wish. A corner is a good oportunity to score a goal without having to be skillful. Its worth practising. In fact there's no excuse not to be better. Every team should pose a threat.

Why does no one do the front post flick on any more ala Arsenal of the early nineties?

Its ok to make sure the players eat correctly & are at top physical condition yet the basics of football seem to have been bypassed. Strange.

Well yesterday much the same could be said for Gonzales. I just think it is a waste having an extra useless defender in the box.

Bob I think the standard of corners from nearly the whole division is shockingly bad at the minute. I agree with you about getting Gerrard in the box.

I have to agree, plus leaving one up top on a corner will result in 2 players being kept back to mark him
