    EL or not next season

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has mixed feelings over Europa League qualification

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admits missing out on a place in Europe next season may not be a bad thing.

Rodgers remains hopeful his side can clinch a place in the Europa League for 2013/14 despite being seven points behind fifth-placed Arsenal with only six matches remaining in the Premier League.

However, the Northern Irishman will not be too disappointed if they fall short as he is plotting an assault on the top four next season.

"There are two arguments," Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo. "As a club we want to be in there. We really enjoyed the European football this season after it had been missing for a year and I know the supporters love the travel.

"But you could argue that a season free of European football would give us a greater chance of finishing in a much higher position in the league - of competing for the top four which is a really difficult task with the teams up there and the finances involved.

"Our squad from the beginning of this season was small so I signed a couple of midgets to make it shorter and we are gradually building that up.

"We would love to be in there and we want to finish as high as we possibly can, but it won't be the end of the world if we don't qualify for Europe. If it doesn't happen then it could end up being a blessing for us.

"It could allow us to have a real strong run at the league next year and that can then really springboard us for the years going forward.

"But ultimately we want a squad strong enough to be able to cope with European football as well as the domestic league and cups."

I can see his reasoning, but personally I want to see us in the Europa League next season.

More money, more games and the chance of attracting better players.

I want us to win things and this would be another opportunity at doing this.
Might as well not enter the League cup or FA cup either if thats his thoughts.
      We come not to play.

Dreadful to hear a Liverpool Manager talking like this. If thats how he feels, keep those thoughts to himself.

I'm not all that fussed either way if I'm totally honest.

As I said yesterday. Rodgers must learn to talk less.

I can't imagine our owners is that impressed with his lack of ambition. IMO what they want to hear is a manager that would say that playing in Europe is a must for a club like Liverpool FC.

He can use bench players in the EL. Nothing to do with the size of the squad.

He has said we want to be in it but if for any reason we don't qualify it won't be the end of the world, which it won't be.

I'm not really sure it is a lack of ambition. Certainly I don't see how wanting to play bench/reserve players is an ambitious alternative stance.

In the short term the EL does bring an extra trophy to compete with but taking it seriously is a drain on the squad and compared to the CL or places in the PL the benefits are not huge unless you win the thing.

I honestly think that the owners want to know that in the long run we will be in the CL and perhaps competing for the league. Getting in someone like Rodgers always suggested that they want to build long term and were willing to take a somewhat bumpier road if necessary.

I'm not a huge fan of the way Rodgers talks to the media but on this occasion I really struggle to think it is a particularly harmful opinion to hold.

He seems to be bracing us for a 7th place finish. Improvement over last season I suppose.

He's said he wants to be in it but it isn't the end of the world if we aren't. Not sure what the problem is. He is right.

Another subtle Arn edit. Midgets are the future.
