He might have a slight point in terms of his general technique I don't know, but criticising him for not saving that shot is laughable really, it was practically unstoppable.

Just shows what a cunt Neville is.
The keeper is low on confidence, it happens to all keepers. His kicking and passing have improved a lot since he has been here. Yes the occasional one is crap and that's what people tend to remember as they are looking for it to happen. He started the season much more vocal. Yet as the results have slipped so has his confidence. A few clean sheets with help from those in front will help him no end.Always borrow money from a pessimist. He won’t expect it back. Oscar Wilde

Did anyone not find the comparison in stances with Neur interesting? Thought it illustrated the point very well.
My biggest concern about Mignolet is not his shot stopping, it is his lack of authority and dominance of his box. On that basis alone I would be looking at replacing him, because this back 4 needs someone dominant behind them, giving the defenders in front of him more confidence."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." The goal is easy to talk about, what really stood out during the game was when Skrtel was screaming at him to come and collect the ball with a striker chasing down on him, Mignolet refused for some unknown reason, just stood in the goal as if Skrtel was about to take a shot at him. I think it's all a mental block with Mignolet, it's obvious playing for us is weighing heavy on his shoulders, this is clouding his judgment and his instinct. He needs the Dr Peters treatment! It's a shame because all the raw materials are there to be a top keeper.

Joe Corrigan (don't laugh) was on the radio this morning and he had a bit of a go at Neville saying outfield players generally have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to keepers. Neville himself said he doesn't know much about it but "we did a little bit on keepers when doing our outfield coaching badges".Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

what Neville and anybody has failed to mention is Migs feet.
When you see the shot from behind Jags Mig does not move his feet at all. He dives to save the shot from a standing position. Even half a step to his left and a dive he would have got a strong hand on it.
Being flat footed is not a good trait for a goalkeeper

****ing 'Jags' ... that's all I've heard from Sheffield United fans this week who still believe Warnock and the reason why they were relegated.Originally posted by ntto View Postwhat Neville and anybody has failed to mention is Migs feet.

But I digress. It was clear Jagielka was striking that ball as soon as it leaves the penalty area. As Kenneth has touched on earlier in this thread, I think it's pretty safe to assume that he's going to hit it hard and low and Mignolet has played the percentages. He's seen the shot coming, he's set himself but such is the speed and unfortunate accuracy of the shot, it's past him before he can react generate the spring from his knees.

Why? I would not have assumed that at all tbh.Originally posted by Muddled View Post****ing 'Jags' ... that's all I've heard from Sheffield United fans this week who still believe Warnock and the reason why they were relegated.

I don't think we can be too critical of Mignolet but the shot was savable from a technical viewpoint, as illustrated by Neville."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley

Because Jagielka hadn't scored for nearly two years and was more successful as an emergency goalkeeper than a scorer of technical goals. It's the last minute of the Derby, he's charging towards the ball and Mignolet can see him shooting. Jagielka would be thinking to get his head over the ball and hit it true and just to get it on target. I'd just assume that Mignolet is expecting this to fly in to the stands or for him make a save low down. The last thing he's probably thought is that he will be reaching for the top corner.Originally posted by Tee View PostWhy? I would not have assumed that at all tbh.

At the end of the day, Neville has chosen to compare two images of a 'keeper upright and a 'keeper low down. Neither are 'correct' as a goalkeeper's stance is down to their own ability. Neur is athletic and nimble; His starting position is to stand tall and bounce on his toes, trusting in his ability and his reflexes to go up, down, left or right. Mignolet may not feel as agile and needs to generate spring and height from bent knees. As such, Neville's opinion is just that, an opinion (and perhaps not an expert opinion) and he has backed it up by showing Neur, the World's best 'keeper at his very peak against Mignolet who is sat behind a malfunctioning defence and looks low on confidence.

Cool muds i didn't see that cheers interesting pics.. although does it not take longer for the right hand to get across the body? I mean in general not for the Jagielka goal.Originally posted by Muddled View PostBecause Mignolet has gone with the correct hand. Red_Polo has much pretty much nailed it in the post match thread.
EDIT: Now with handy (geddit!) links:
Snippet #1
Snippet #2 ... with pictures
We're all being a bit pedantic but i suppose when your keeper isn't playing well you start to over analyse things.

I believe goalkeepers have started to use their top hand more to allow for the movement of the ball. If you lead with your lower hand, you're pretty much set in your direction and you're stretching. If you lead with your higher hand, you're range is higher (as illustrated in the pictures) and it allows for you to make adjustments to your arm. Which is quicker though? Jeez, I dunno. I think there could be an argument for either and would be dependent on the shot itself. They'd have to make that decision in a split second too!Originally posted by danperkins View PostCool muds i didn't see that cheers interesting pics.. although does it not take longer for the right hand to get across the body? We all want what's best for the club and often defeats (or in this case, it felt like a defeat) make supporters want to identify fault and blame to make themselves feel better about how we can improve and get over that negative feeling. It's often why post match threads after a victory hardly hit double figures.Last edited by Muddled; 30-09-14, 12:16 PM.
