Most keepers these days punch. Must be to do with the modern football.

the new ball is lighter and more likely to wobble.
not a problem with it getting punched so long as it goes well away from the danger. mig often punches it back to the striker to have another go.

the ronaldo free kick came straight at him and he could have caught it mid chest height and dead centre so he could easily have seen if the ball was wobbling. it looked straight enough on the telly.

Courtois, De Gea, Lloris etc all catch the ball way more regular than Mig. He misses it half the time too.

It invites pressure back almost instantly.

Been counting all season. I guess a better way of saying it would be that they all have greater command of their area and they certainly don't flap at the ball as much as Mignolet does, and that's based on watching these teams.

If he was higher in confidence he'd catch it. No surprise to see him punching it atm.

For the time being I'm happy to see him do anything if on the whole he's having a good game. And all of his punches had distance on them, not like they were weak. He had a very good game tonight.

According to the Sunderland fans before he signed for us he has always punched the ball...not a confidence thing just the way he is. I thought he played well last night but constantly punching the ball does invite pressure back onto us

no more so than a **** defensive header or an awful hospital pass from lucas like was seen last night, those things always put us back in the ****.

I seem to remember Reina punching almost everything that came into the box as well infact I'm sure it was trained into him to punch the ball clear and be aggressive that way rather than catch it.

He had a good game IMO last night made a few good saves from typical mental lapses from the defensive side of the team.

reina would punch the ball to the halfway line, right into the path of torres

I did think he done well last night but if he held onto the ball more & was that bit more commanding in the penalty area.. it would be a much more calming influence on our ropey defence.

Benitez's reasoning was that players attack the goalkeeper and are more physical, so it's better to punch.

With Real's delivery from crosses and clever passing, Mignolet did a fantastic job in clearing the ball away.

That was fantastic....lucky that it was on the whistle.

But it's clear to see why the manager likes our back line to retain the ball. They're all so cultured with the ball and graceful under pressure. Add in the movement and energy of our midfield offering options, and it's clear to see why we're blitzing the league.
