Three points against a team playing their first home game of the season, coming off the back of two morale-boosting performances? Yes please.
We controlled the tempo in the first half and protected our lead in the second with hopes of catching them on the counter. It wasn’t as pleasing on the eye as our performance against Stoke, but then in 38 league games, we’re gonna have some stinkers. If we can get points whilst under-performing, then power to us. Sure, there are areas of concern, but then we’re not the finished article and neither are we going to rest on our laurels; I’m sure it’s something we are working hard on.
Other than the usual, what was interesting slash concerning was how we tuck our full-backs into the penalty box when defending. It relies so much on a covering wide man and both Coutinho and Henderson are playing in positions that aren’t their best. As such, there are massive gaps that better teams will exploit. Also, I’m sure he will, but Mignolet needs to work on his kicking. It could be nerves and kicking with a heavy foot, but we surrendered possession straight back to Villa on numerous occasions. But then you could argue he’s earned us four points alone with the two saves at the death.
But yeah, bottom line - two clean-sheets and six points from six ... **** yeah.
Other than the first 30 minutes, we were pretty poor, but managed to keep another clean sheet. Mignolet is earning his money, big time. That save was phenomenal.
All in all, when was the last time we won our first two games? I can't remember. Pleased. Very pleased.
what a tense second half, wrong sub from rodgers imo, should have boghut on sterling to drag the villa defence wide allowing more space in the middle to attack, but brilliant result
