There must be reasons he only played 9 games for Granada, 12 for Bordeaux and didn't have a look in for Villa despite them looking a shambles at the back.

Without mentioning his ability. I think a lot of it has to do with age. Young defenders are trusted way less than younger attackers I think.

If a inexperienced defender ****s up it could cost a goal, if the same attacking player does it, it might cost a throw or a goal kick.

I dont think Ilori will make it here, but that's only based on a hunch, not how he played the other night.

His fitness was way below par, but that was understandable. He mistimed numerous headers, which was the main concern. I think we could see Ilori tried out in a few surprise positions if he impresses in training.

He had Bogdan behind him, Enrique next to him and a couple of kids at full back. Thrown into a hostile away cup tie with about 24 hours to prepare (if that) against a team with nothing to lose. With all that in mind I thought he did quite well. It wasn't the second coming of Beckenbauer, but there was nothing to suggest he will be a disaster.

I guess we will bring in some real quality in this position either this month or in the summer. I'd imagine if Ilori plays and trains well he'd have a chance of being a squad member (like Kolo is now) who can play league and fight for first team if he is good enough.

I think it is difficult to read anything into Friday nights performance.
