How important are goals from wide players?

that's exactly what I was thinking, which worries me about Pennant because he has managed 11 goals in his entire career.Originally posted by dwwDepends, but with the formation we play with two deep lying CM's - very."The definition of insanity is not running into the same wall again and again; it's expecting a different result every time you do it."

But he did that in an Arsenal team set up to allow the wide midfielders to join in the box, since then at Leeds and Brum the role Pennant has played has been more out and out winger. I think this is part of the reason we see him cut inside so much - Rafa is trying to get him back to being the player he was looking set to be at Arsenal. The trouble is he is doing it at the wrong times, and too far away from goal to cause problems.
I actually think that the way we play we should expect more than 5 goals each from the wingers per season (on average - assuming we change personel). If the CM's don't contribute then like in Arsenal teams of the Wenger era the wide players need to provide a lot of the attacking threat."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

To be fair to him he has played only one season as a first team regular and that was for a god awful Birmingham. I would imagine a goals per minute stat would do him more credit as well.Originally posted by anfieldanfieldPennant's career stats state he scores 1 goal every 15 games.
Pretty woeful.
I think you have to accept that Pennant was bought as potential. He has shown glimpses of what he can do for us, but he needs to improve enormously to challenge for the team."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
