Premier League title race: West Ham will try and 'spoil the Manchester City party' because 'everyone wants Liverpool to win it'

Sam Allardyce says West Ham will do everything to beat Manchester City on Sunday because "everyone would like to see Liverpool win it".

Manchester City need just a point to be sure of winning their title in six years, but if they lose to West Ham at the Etihad and Liverpool win their game at Anfield against Newcastle, the Reds will be crowned champions.

West Ham have little to play for having already secured Premier League football for another season. Yet Allardyce insists that won't mean they will roll over.

"From a neutral's point of view I think everybody would like to see Liverpool win it, and from a personal point of view I'd like to see Steven Gerrard win it," said the West Ham manager.

"It's the last thing for him which he hasn't quite achieved at Liverpool. He's been a one club man all his life. Obviously they've let it slip out of their hands. They had it to take, but they've now left it in the hands of Manchester City.

"We all know Man City in full cry are very difficult to play against. We've got to go out there and give a fantastic performance to stop them trying to grasp the title on that day."

West Ham's record against Manuel Pellegrini's side this season is terrible. They've played them three times, conceding 12 goals in the process, including a 9-0 aggregate drubbing in the Capital One Cup semi-finals. Allardyce is well aware of the task facing his side on Sunday.

"Of course that will be hugely difficult - this is the best team at home in the league. They've only lost once, against Chelsea, their goal record is fantastic and they've got great, great players."

He continued: "So every player on top of his form, every player can go out and give everything they've got from the basis we're already in the Premier League next season.

"Let's try and spoil Manchester City's party."

Mind you he's still going to lose 5-0.

Don't get the resignation to our fate at all. Will West Ham win at City? Unlikely but far from impossible. Let's say Carroll pops up in the final minute with a goal to hand us the title where would it lie in the list of British football shocks? I doubt it would even make the top 100. City are a very good side but,as we've found out twice this season, West Ham can be stubborn, well organised and possess a cutting edge with a couple of players who can turn a game. We're still in this, anyone who thinks otherwise is a defeatist not a realist IMO.

                More reasons to be cheerful

Man City have lost just one of their last 13 Premier League meetings with West Ham (W9 D3).

The Hammers have won just two of their last 25 away league games against Manchester City, losing 20 and drawing three.

This is the first time that West Ham have played away from home on the final day of a Premier League season since 2006-07 - on that occasion they won 1-0 in Manchester against City's rivals United.

In only one previous Premier League season (21 in 2006-07) have West Ham lost more games than they have so far in 2013-14 (19).

Four of Manchester City's six Premier League defeats this season have come on a Sunday.

Andy Carroll has scored five Premier League goals against Manchester City; more than he has against any other opponent in the competition.

Yaya Toure (20) is only the second central midfielder to score 20+ goals in a single Premier League season after Frank Lampard (22) for Chelsea in 2009-10.

City have won more points at home than any other Premier League team this season (49).

Manchester City have converted 20.4% of their shots in to goals this season - no other side has converted 20% of their shots into goals in any of the last 10 seasons.

West Ham have won just one point in their seven Premier League games against the current top four sides this season (D1 L6).

                also I found another one

West Ham United have never lost when Stewart Downing has scored or assisted.

                    - anyone who knows Downing's stats will know why that is funny

For sure it is not beyond the realms of possibility that West Ham win. However, I think most shocks tend to happen due to the favourites taking it easy, or being surprised by the opposition.

Man City will not be surprised by the Hammers. And they will be bang up for this. So that makes the chance of an upset very slim. But one rash challenge, one mistake, it's football & anything can happen. Look at it this way. West Ham have better players than Sunderland.

Are we the last team to lose the title on the final day having been 1st going into the game?

Yeah it wouldnt be the biggest shock ever but I dont think it's defeatist to think a team who's only lost 3 home league games in 3 years will avoid defeat to an average team who has no motivation. You can never rule it out as an early red card or reffing mistake can swing it in West Ham's favour suddenly but it is hugely unlikely.

is he one of the lucky ones who gets a car? A mate of mine sells cars to premiership players and Nolan is one one his best clients, not sure if he still does but he used to buy about 30 of his relatives a new car was either every year. or every 2 years.

It is very unlikely, but not impossible. I am resigned to our fate and if something incredible happens then that would be amazing. It would be very uncharacteristic for City to lose this game, but the pressure might get to them.

I have sufficient faith in the capriciousness of the footballing gods to have put £5 on at 18/1 for us to win the title...

                                Better odds than the lottery.
