    Corners & Free Kicks

We need to sort this out i **** it nearly everytime we are defending corners & free kicks ... you would think this should be easy enough to sort in training but we are getting worse ... am i on my own here?

    see the skrtel thread

it would be better to put all the sighs and whinges into here though

    copied from the skrtel thread;

if the shirt pulling/holding is a tactic that is so widely used but is ultimately illegal, and we are still **** at it then you have to wonder why we still persist with this stupid tactic.

when we see pics of lads all bibbed up training they are still holding and grabbing at each other. surely the trainers should get them to focus on winning the ball rather than trying to out-grapple the man.
not only are we consistently ****e at set pieces because of our obsession with strength over skills, its only a matter of time before we start to concede soft penalties because of this.
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

Agree, we are terrible at defending any form of cross, especially from dead balls. The goal we conceded against Cardiff was a prime example, with a man left completely unmarked

38% of goals conceded came about from set plays. Not including WBA's penalty. At least 3 others came from high balls into the box.

I though it would be higher but it's still pretty ****.

A high proportion of goals conceded from set plays indicates that we're very strong defensively during open play. Free kicks and corners are sometimes the only serious opportunities to score that teams get against us. I'm sure we could defend them better, but we don't seem to be doing all that badly. Is there a league table somewhere of goals conceded from set plays? I bet we're nowhere near the top.

I have been looking for that very same thing for a couple of days now,not found one yet. I can find stats for goals scored from set pieces but not those conceded from them

Every time we concede a corner or a free kick I am bricking it.

It has to be the coaching/tactics - its not as if we dont have tall players who can pick up a man.

Me too,and we have a game tomorrow against a team set up to exploit that very well.

Dont think it's coaching, just that we arent the biggest team, dont have a biggun to pull back and help either like Crouch, Carroll etc, two full backs who's biggest fault is concentration (Glen and Enrique) and a centre back who would rather be in the UFC (Skrtel). When you add all that up you're going to have some problems, doubt its much worse than a lot of other teams though. And it's also worth mentioning we've scored 11 this season from corners and free kicks which is the second best in the league.

                    Good stat.

Size will have a part to play, but we do have players who are 6ft+ so imo should be doing better.

We put a lot of emphasis on goals from set-pieces - as Chris has correctly pointed out, only Man City have scored more with 12. As such, many other teams will look to rehearse a situation they have a lot of control over. We're not the biggest team, but we certainly need to be a little more organised.

And Mignolet needs to command his area which will make defending set pieces less of a challenge.

Yup impressive that, we've conceded 7 from set pieces I believe this season not sure though how that fares against others.

Break down of our offensive goals from set-pieces.
