I meant more that he thought link up play around the box was going to break them, we needed runners and peopling gambling to beat their man. It was quite similar game to the Chelsea/Barca games at CityOriginally posted by Nigey View PostOf course it was the right way. We're playing at home. I don't we've sat back for our wins against City, Everton and Arsenal anyway, but we did exploit their deficiencies on the break. Chelsea just aren't a team which wants the ball.

It's difficult to run at a defence which sits so deep. You just run into a brick wall. What we needed to do is to be more intricate with our passing inside their box.Originally posted by Liverpool View PostI meant more that he thought link up play around the box was going to break them, we needed runners and peopling gambling to beat their man. They had a huge number of bodies in the box though Nigey so its difficult even with really intricate passing and movement

With Sturridge missing up front, they had one less attacker to worry about. Don't think Sturridge was anywhere fit enough to be efficient anyway, but it might have caused them a few more problems at the beginning of the match (when it was a bit more open) just with his presence. We just needed a break from somewhere, but it never arrived.Originally posted by Lecter View PostThey had a huge number of bodies in the box though Nigey so its difficult even with really intricate passing and movement

I don't get all this stuff about tactics. Its not as if we threw the kitchen sink at them in the first half, we played in a pretty controlled manner, probing for an opening and had a few half chances and all in all were completely comfortable in a game we didn't have to win until the Gerrard error. After that it was different, of course, but I really don't see that we got it wrong with the way we set out and played the first half even remotely.I could not dig, I dared not rob:

Yeah, cos thats really important... Do tell me you thought Chelsea would approach the game differently then they did, and that it came as a surprise to you.Originally posted by Chris View PostWhere were you before the game then?
FFS. Chelsea are always like this when they meet attacking sides. You didnt see his Inter vs. Barca?

It kind of is when after the game you apparently have the grand plan that would have solved everything. But before the game your only worry seemed to be would Victor Moses tell the Chelsea management stuff about us, nothing about tactics.

When teams do a Chelsea that is what you need a break
Such as a dodgy penalty award (or even a genuine one) a wicked deflection or an absolute world class goal scored by somebody
I'm not sure Sturridge would have changed much he thrives on getting in behind, he'd have had to have been on the Middle row of the Kop to get behind Chelseas back fourBob Paisley - "This club has been my life. Plenty of teams have failed to come up with an answer to Mourinho's patented 9 - 0 - 1 formation in the past, and I'd imagine plenty more will fail in the future. No shame in that.
They create a solid wall infront of their box so you cant get through the middle, so you can either go down the wings (we have neither the wingers or the stickers suitable for this) or you can take long shots (as some have said, that's one area we can improve on next season).
I suppose you can sit back and wait for them to eventually push out a bit, but I can't see Mourinho doing that unless they absolutely have to win - and so you'll end up with a 0-0 borefest. In hindsight, we probably should have done this, but thats just not Rodgers mindset, and not one the team will have been coached to do either.
Its disappointing, but thats football - you can't win them all.
We're still in it - City need to win all three remaining games, and they're plenty capable of a ****up. If they win it, it will have been with a 5-game winning streak, and you would have to hold your hands up and say they were the more consistent team over the season. As long as we win our remaining two games, we'll still have a reasonable chance of winning the title - all the pressure is on City now.

Knowing what they were going to do, and actually overcoming it, are two different things. Man City couldn't, A. Madrid couldn't, and now we couldn't. However, as I just said above, was our game plan really so bad? They never looked like scoring in the first half, and it was them who needed to win after all. Once they had a lead to defend we were in serious trouble, but prior to that only one team looked like they had any likelyhood of scoring and that was us.Originally posted by DKdan View PostYeah, cos thats really important... The game was quite open for the first 10/15 minutes. That's maybe when we could have had a break and maybe Sturridge could have got that break. They only had to focus on controlling Suarez and only Sterling was really getting any space running at their defenders. Sturridge could have provided an outlet - one other for them to worry about.
Thought we played very well apart from that, but maybe that's just because Chelsea just allowed us to pass the ball with no pressure up to their box.Are we winning?
