How did Palace try to stop Sturridge and Suarez?
They got Chamakh to man mark Gerrard when we were in possession, that's how.
If you can't stop the problem negate the source.

Now that didn't work for Palace 100% as it can't because of the transition and Gerrard put Sturridge in with a great long ball but it did work for 90% of the 1st half as only a set piece put us ahead.

In open play Chamakh went and marked Gerrard leaving Skrtel and Sakho in unopposed possession.

You can be defensive without retreating into your shell, thats the problem yesterday the team retreated and retreated and retreated

Now some will say that bringing on a forward or wide player wide player will means you push forward but that really has no effect on your defenders if their mindset is fallback.

We needed someone at the back who would push them further up the pitch, condense the play and tighten the lines

some of the goals we conceded last night were from basically allow too much time and space in front of us and not pushing up as a unit, to change that sort of mentality at the back it has to be a defensive change not a wideman ala moses

If we had brought on more defenders we would have had more men in the box. At times there was far too much space and they just ran round us another centreback would have meant less gaps between players and less space to run into

To me its wasnt only tactical there are so many things we could have done but it was poor game management not only from the team on the pitch but also tactically and substitution from the manager

I'm not going to be too critical of Rodgers hes tried a similar way a number of times this season and his methods have worked, this time they didnt

I completely agree we didn't do well enough, completely agree it's something we have to do better which will come with this experience, note how we broke Palace down using different tactics to those we employed vs Chelsea.
We learnt from the Chelsea game and improved in that regard.

The 1st goal is Coutinho's fault, there is no way the Palace player gets past Sterling that easily then the shot gets deflected, we got criticised for shooting from outside the box vs Chelsea, we only needed the luck Palace got.

2nd goal is Coutinho again for not fouling Bolasie outside their box before it even gets to Johnson, Coutinho then lets 6 players who had already played 80 minutes run past him to try and recover while he saunters back.

3rd goal is Skrtel 100%. Yes Johnson should be more tucked in but what is Skrtel doing chasing out of position like a hypnotised rabbit.

Rodgers did try to change the game with his substitution of Moses for Sturridge, he left Suarez up and put Moses right hand side, he went 4-5-1 with the idea being Moses' pace and power would help stop Bolasie.

It didn't work but he did try to affect change, he did try to protect Johnson and he did try to stem the attacks flooding down that side.
The goals didnt all come from Bolasie though only one did, one was a straight punt down the pitch, the other from a throw in which was thrown backwards and our players just stood off

That retreating mentality is something that just has to be eliminated next season. If Man City can avoid doing that with the slowest CB in the league in Demichelis then we can avoid it. Mignolet/Skrtel/Sakho have to have far better communication coming into the first game in August. Sakho and Skrtel as a combo appear to have dreadful issues reading each other and covering for one another.

As I said earlier Rodgers has got decisions right a number of times by going on the front foot

Yesterday wasnt the correct call for me, I'd have preferred him to have brought on Agger like he did V Norwich

Is Bolasie just a speed merchant because he's been bloody handy for Palace recently.

Honestly I'd prefer Agger to have started the last 4 games

Palace crowd was outstanding last night. Once they got their first goal it was a wall of noise. It's a small ground so they can orchestrate it better but I've never been to a game where the entire 4 stands were in such unison. Fair play to them.

That said, being in among the home fans was horrible. I've done it loads of times in the past but the circumstances last night and those home fans around you being very aware you're an away supporter made it awful. There was a Red sat directly behind me and we hugged at the final whistle. I was close to tears, there were many who were worse than me. The Red section's singing was superb after the final whistle

Your right, they were unreal in their support for their team; they were in full voice for 94mins, so much so at 1am this morning i still had 'CPFC','CPFC','CPFC', going around in my head !!!!!!

They definatley had a massive effect on the result & fair play to them for that....... having come up last year & destined for a return to Div1 in november, they were obviously buzzing & with it being the last home game were in party mode.

Man City & Chelsea fans should take a long hard look at themselves & compare their support to that of Palace

Massive difference between Palace support and Everton's this past weekend.

The Palace fans are the closest you'll see to a foreign-like support in this country. Its like going to somewhere in Turkey for just the relentless noise regardless really of the score!
