Steven Gerrard earned Liverpool €500,000 (£398,000) with his last-gasp penalty against Ludogorets Razgrad in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

With one swipe of the boot the Liverpool captain won his side three points, detonated an atom bomb of ecstasy in the Kop, and doubled the club’s earnings from the evening.

Clubs in the Champions League are awarded €1m (£796,331) by Uefa for every win in the group stage of the competition, and €500,000 for a draw.

Cruelly for Liverpool’s Bulgarian opponents, Gerrard’s winner also denied Ludogorets what would have been a welcome windfall. Razgrad spent just £2m on new players this summer.

Meanwhile, the Reds would need to progress all the way to the final to even come close to recouping some of their massive transfer spend.

Liverpool spent over £100m on new players in the most recent transfer window, while a repeat of the 2005 heroics would see the club pick up a minimum of £18m.

Clubs pick up £2.79m from the round of 16, £3.11m from the quarter final-stage and £3.9 from the semi-finals. Competition runners up receive £5.18m while winners receive £8.6m.

Wow. I left the pub just after we scored to sprint for my train. Looks like I missed all the fun. Just as well, I was spitting feathers for most of the match. I don't think we look individually terrible at the moment (apart from Mignolet perhaps...) but we need to get some semblance of team-play together quickly. Very pleased for Balotelli.

The best part of £50m spent in additions to central defence and between the sticks and we're just as bad, if not worse, than when Rogers took over. We'll struggle against Basle let alone Real Madrid at this pace.

Still believe we need to give the back 4 we started with last night patience and a proper run of games together, they've played 3 games together and conceded 2 goals, not great but not terrible either. Apart from the Spurs game they have looked dodgy but a brand new defence generally doesn't hit the ground running, the next few games will be a clearer indication of how they're doing provided of course that Rodger's doesn't bring back Perkins boy into the staring 11.

It's always tempting to kneejerk when results/performances are poor. Patience and perspective needed right now IMO.

I'd argue that patience and perspective are always needed. Not just right now. But then again, where is the fun in that?

Ludogorets were very impressive. Kept thinking they'd tire with the pace they were going after 60, 70, 80 even 90 minutes in the game but no they just kept going and going. In hindsight we've pulled off one of the hardest victories of the 1st round so far without playing well.

Ludogorets will so not let Basle win, 1 million Euros is riding on it.

Seems like a desperate attempt for making trouble for us IMHO.

lots concerns at the moment. Just need to keep pace in the league and get results until Rodgers finds his best side.
