Realistically though.
All Upson would be is cover, unless he could force his way into the team with some solid performances, He wont get in IMO ahead of Agger and Carra to quickly, so he would be brought in as cover. And at 27 and coming into his prime, I dont think he would be a terrible signing. Not as if we can afford to go splashing out on uropes top Centrehalves for cover. Sammi must surely be in his last season or damn close to it. I dont think it would be a terrible signing.
Id rather see us spending our big money on exciting attacking players anyway, not cover for the centre back positions.Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:

Prefer Woodgate.
Upson's not a bad player, he's very good on his day but i'm not sure if he's quite got what it takes at a top 4 side."Let me say for the record, I am not a gangster and never have been. I kind of though that the reason Pennant was let go from Arsenal was his attitude. I was willing to believe tha this had improved when he moved to us, so far he hasn't done anything wrong in that regard. He hasn't however performed as yet so maybe Arsene just thought he wasn't going to develop but I'm still holding out hope.Originally posted by ShaggyAlonsoI always felt it was relevant and pertinent that Wenger had decreed Pennant wasn’t good enough and bombed him out.

Upson is a different story. I think he is a decent, but not great, player and would fit Rafa's style of defence better than Wengers. However he is injury prone and I think if no in defensive system, certainly in physical attributes we should look at the Arsenal and Man Utd defence. Both of those sides have defences who will put out at least 3 outstanding athletes with pace and strength. Upson is no athlete and in my opinion is too similar to Carra to make a good purchase. Still if he came I would give him the benefit of the doubt.Last edited by dww; 17-11-06, 01:20 PM."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

To be fair I think we need to get a squad of players together who are all capable of playing the way Rafa wants. In order to do that we need to sign at least three more players (Assuming that Sami is on his way out) even assuming that Pennant and Gonzalez settle.Originally posted by thesilverfoxlfcIts time we started buy "World Class" player and stop been cheapo's sick of it
I think we will see a pattern like this year for the next few years where we buy one big signing (Kuyt) and gamble on two or three others. The problem this year was that the Pennant gamble was really a bit too costly (unless the terms of the deal are better than I have been led to believe). I think we will see a shift next season to the gambles being younger players - more Agger/Palletta type signings. Upson if he does come in would be nothing but a stop gap. As such at the right price we could probably sell him in a year with no loss."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I dont think he would be brought in as a regular first teamer, but more of a squad player.Originally posted by thesilverfoxlfcI take your points dww.
but should we really be looking in the championship for players if we want to make a challenge for the Prem and Champs league
Agger and Carra are good enough for a challenge on the Premier League IMO.Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:

Yeah, im really excited about seeing more of Agger, I honestly think he will be a better defender than carra. Has all the attributes to be one of the worlds best.Originally posted by thesilverfoxlfcThey will next year i think to fine players
