Rafa on Stevie in the middle

    From Sky

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez insists the decision on where to play Steven Gerrard rests with him and not the England international.

Gerrard claimed in midweek that he would be set for an extended run in central midfield - a position he generally favours, despite more often than not being deployed on the right side of the team by Benitez.

Gerrard intimated that Mohamed Sissoko's shoulder surgery could have paved the way for a tandem with Xabi Alonso, although Benitez insists he has other alternatives to consider.

The Spaniard is adamant that deploying Gerrard on the right has maintained the balance of his team.

However, the former Valencia boss's tactics have been called into question following last weekend's limp surrender at Arsenal and supporters' eyes have now turned to his team selection for Saturday's match at Middlesbrough.

"We used Bolo Zenden [against Arsenal] and I was happy with Bolo and Xabi. And I am happy with Steven when he plays in the middle," Benitez told Sky Sports News.

"I spoke with him before the Arsenal game. I wanted to explain that he will play more games in the centre but against Arsenal he would play on the right side.

"We need to find the right balance for the team. We haven't got a right winger in my team who will score 23 goals. Stevie played the right side and scored lots of goals and also Xabi and Sissoko give us balance.

"Against Arsenal we knew Fabregas would play between the lines.

"Steven is a player that likes to go forward and always when you go forward you need to come back.

"If the other team have players like Fabregas it's important to close the space and be close to him.

"I try to have the best team for each game and use the best players we have.

"We know Steven on the right side can go forward and create problems for the defenders of other teams.

"Maybe with other players we could use Steven in the middle, but with the players we had, we decided it would be best to use Steven on the right. It wasn't bad."

It was bad though, because we got beat 3-0.

Is Rafa starting to make excuses like a previous Liverpool manager did, I hope not!

FLMAO!!!! Has there ever been a winger that scores this amount? thats why we have strikers...oh yeah I forgot....they need chances to be created in the first place!!!

he's losing it. stubborn to the end.

Maybe it's not his fault the players didn't deliver. Find it hard to believe that simpy putting Gerrard in the middle would have stopped us getting out played.

Surely that is just a reference to Stevies scoring last season? I don't think it was an excuse for the preformance - more that the tactics weren't to blame. Not sure if I entirely believe that, but I think that the major factor was a lack of application from the players and poor movement from certain players. Our best period of the game was the first 40 minutes and Stevie was on the right at that point.

I have to agree Bob, I'm never one to knee-jerk/panic but he is slowly starting so show signs of what I hated most in Houillier - Very stubborn, has made a few baffling decisions/subs

In the Arsenal game perhaps not, but overall this season by playing Gerrard wide, what have the results been like & how many goals has he scored?

He's out of form which is clear to see, but he's more likely to discover it by playing in his preferred position, surely?

Unless Pennant was a stop gap signing, why not play him week in week out on the right?

You should listen to the full press conference instead of the cut and paste job on sky; what he said made a lot of sense.

I've never heard him make sense. He speaks a load of old bollocks in broken english. But I don't care what he says as long as the results & play is good.

Aye - Sky and in particular Andy Gray, seem to have some sort of agenda here.

They are continually ensuring this is a story. It bores me to tears. As did the rotation debate and the zonal marking debate.

At the end of the day, Sky Sports news need to generate stories to fill 24 hours a day worth of coverage. What passes as a headline story for them (e.g Joe Royle says Andy Johnson is inexperienced at international level sensation) are mostly a joke.
                        Oh I don't know.

at the end of the day if we were winning and not conceding daft goals they'd be nothing for them to have an agenda about.

He also said in the full interview

" When Steve Gerrard scored 23 goals last season, mainly from playing on the right, no one questioined whether he should play on the right or in the middle"

a very good point I think
Lawrenson:"Well thats 3 good chances they have had in the first 3 minutes of this half"

Motson:"" Yes Mark, you could almost say that they have had 3 chances in as many minutes"

Lawrenson: Errr I thought I just did say that, John"
