Everton vs Liverpool: Build Up Thread

K.O time TBC by the looks of things!

Merseyside police are to mount a legal challenge tomorrow to change the kick-off time for the Merseyside derby, just five days before the game.

The hotly anticipated Premier League clash between Everton and Liverpool on Saturday is due to start at 5.30pm so it can be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

But police have raised concerns that the timing would increase the risk of alcohol-fuelled disorder both before, during, and after the game.

The match at Goodison Park has been raised to a “Category C” fixture with a high risk of disorder.

Liverpool council’s licensing committee last week turned down a police request to amend the terms of the ground safety certificate to bring forward the kick-off time to lunchtime.

Now police are to take their case to a magistrates hearing on Tuesday, warning of how their resources could be stretched.

Any decision to change the kick-off time at this late stage would have big implications for televised games.

The Merseyside derby is the second of two Premier League derbies to be broadcast live on Saturday, after the North London derby between Tottenham and Arsenal which kicks off at 12.45pm.

Superintendent Chris Markey of Merseyside police told the licensing committee a lunchtime kick-off would be a safer option, adding that the police did not make the request lightly.

But members chose to leave the start time as it was, and said Everton FC had ”taken sufficient mitigation to ensure reasonable safety at the ground."

The Premier League clash had originally been scheduled for a 3pm kick-off, but this cannot be shown live on television.

This was changed to 5.30pm after consultations between the Premier League and Sky Sports, making it the latest time the Merseyside derby has been played on a Saturday.

Police said this increased the risk of alcohol-fuelled disorder because of the “excessive time” allowed for alcohol consumption by fans attending the fixture and by those seeking to view it on TV either locally to the ground or in the city centre.

They also said it would be easier for those wishing to engage in criminal activity because they would have the “protection of darkness.”

The Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, wrote to the Premier League asking it to review the time of the match and that it be moved forward to earlier in the day as requested by police, but the request was rejected.

Yes I know it's not our next game but made sense to start a thread to post that news in.

Was there any bother with the 8:00 KO last year. What is the difference here?

Edit: Just read back, it's because it's a Saturday.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Have there been any problems involved with the match for a number of years? Why not give it a go and see if it can work in these days?

If it is half 5 please god let Gerrard score a 40 yard free kick taken from the wrong place in injury time.

Didn't Merseyside police try the same thing with another Everton game? I'm sure the game wasn't re-arranged then and I can't see it being re-arranged now.

Happy with the thread though, back to serious business after frivolities in the FA cup.

            Mig
            Can Skrtel Sakho
            Ibe Hendo Lucas Moreno
            Gerrard Coutinho
            Sturridge

Extra rest for Sterling - to come on in Gerrard's place middle of second half.
            One tit for another.

              Markovic Hendo Lucas Moreno
              Sterling Coutinho
              Sturridge

Our forward options are looking decent, Lallana and Gerrard on the bench for me.
              * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Can anyone see Rodgers leaving Gerrard out of this one?

I can't see how he can come in without messing up the feel of the side, Henderson at wing back isn't great. Lucas plays 100% and Gerrard doesn't have the legs to force Henderson out.

After pushing for months to get this changed, they would have egg on their face if it passed off with no trouble, as I imagine they'll be pretty strict arresting people to prove a point.

good point. Expect to see loads of people arrested for being drunk and disorderly.....without actually being disorderly!!!

Couldnt give a fock as long as LFC win.....

The point about Gerrard being dropped is a good one. I wouldnt be surprised at all if Stevie started on the bench, came on, and scored a goal. For me it would be madness to mess with the defensive formation, crazy to mess with the Lucas / Hendo combo and Sterling and Coutinho have to play. If Sturridge is fit to start then he should as well so Stevie would then miss out - as would lallana....

He's ****. From Wythenshawe in Manchester but reckons he's an Altrincham fan. He gave us two pens at West Ham last season...but in the same game he also allowed Carroll to clatter Mignolet for their goal.

                              In short, he's **** and a cunt.
