Haha I'll be after a spare for that too without a doubt.

Not really because your full backs push forward to give width in a diamond or a 4,3,3. I don't think a standard 442 is the way to go at all.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostYou could equally view it as using just 3 defenders instead of the 4 most use.
Our current system means we often have 3 centre backs and a defensive midfielder and then if the wing backs drop back as well we have 6 bodies packing the defence.

Well, it's easy to distort the debate to suit by going to either extreme with who is pushing up or dropping back in any given context - the truth is it's obviously more fluid than that.Originally posted by captainfog View PostNot really because your full backs push forward to give width in a diamond or a 4,3,3. In using this system there have typically been three defenders on the pitch at a time, one of who supposedly has their future as a midfielder. Meanwhile the wingbacks (which you've perversely implied above are more defensive than fullbacks in a back four) are typically creative players that wouldn't look out of their element as number 10s!Like blood on iron

I broadly agree with you, although I think that the movement of Can into midfield was in effect a defensive move.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostWell, it's easy to distort the debate to suit by going to either extreme with who is pushing up or dropping back in any given context - the truth is it's obviously more fluid than that.

I was reminded this week of van Gaals famous football wishlist prediction from his time in Germany (throw ins replaced by kick ins, no more penalty shoot outs, etc.) and his talk of having centrebacks being the playmakers of the future. I think it is something we should think about if we plan to make a back three a long term choice."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.
