Think of the signing and the compensation payment to be separate. There is no price to the transfer; Ings has signed on a free.

Because he's under 23, we have to compensate Burnley for developing his skills. Spurs acting the **** and that Soccer AM's Skill School video has strengthened Burnley's negotiating position.

But the signing will surely be subject to agreement of the compensation payment. Would be crazy not to include that in his contract.

Maybe. His contract will come to an end at the end of this month, so I suppose it depends on the finer details. I think it's all about positioning and the Premier League will have to set the amount. Hopefully they will also look at why Spurs lodged a £12m bid for somebody who had less than 60 days on his contract.

Agree with most of what you said but not so sure (yet) about the certainty of Ings being an upgrade on Lambert and Origi being one on Borini.

All we have to go on for Ings is his one and only season in the premiership and his one good season in the Championship. I seem to recall that Lambert joined us on the back of two decent Premiership seasons (both in which he had a better goal and assist return than Ings did in his one Premiership season) and one good Championship season (again a season in which he did better in that division that Ings did).

So hard to argue that Ings is an upgrade based on what he did for his previous club when Lambert did better for longer at his previous club. He might be an upgrade, but his record before playing for Liverpool is inferior to that of Lambert before playing for Liverpool.

For Origi and Borini a similar case could be made in that Borini was at the very least as effective as Origi when given as much game time. Personally I think Origi will turn out to be an upgrade but that is based on my own gut feeling rather than it being backed up by goal returns.

I also think that maybe you are comparing the wrong players.

Ings being a replacement for Borini makes more sense as they are similar (ish) players in how they play. High work rate, pressing, harrying, lots of runs off the ball.

Origi for Lambert could be seen as replacing a physically strong player with another physically strong player that has much greater pace.
Regarding Ings & Lambert comparisons. I think Ings is a better fit for the way we play. No doubt Lambert did well for the saints but he never suited our style & we never played to his strengths.

Burnley will receive less money from Liverpool for forward Danny Ings than they hoped for. A tribunal will decide the fee - Burnley want £10m for the 22-year-old, but Liverpool value him at no more than £6m. (Daily Mail)

Ings not starting tonight. Garbutt starts though so worth watching.

                        Kick off delayed to 8.15pm

The one player I would pick from the U21 is Stones. He looks lie he's going to be a super player. Garbutt done ok, very positive.

Garbutt looks like he could struggle defensively if a team decides to attack.
