Not sure I agree mate. We were threadbare in defence and Southgate picks the squad. He was not long back from injury, and playing more for club than he should. I suppose our club should shoulder some of the blame for allowing him to be available for selectionOriginally posted by Fredo View PostA bit harsh on Southgate. It's the authorities which are to blame.

I think some of this is moot tbh.Originally posted by Norbs View PostNot sure I agree mate. We were threadbare in defence and Southgate picks the squad. It was a training session, by all accounts he jumped, landed badly and ****ed his knee.
Had he not been training with England, he would have been training with Liverpool. He wouldn't have had the week off. And it's the kind of injury that could happen at any time.
It's just really ****ty luck that it happened at all.Oh I don't know.

Could argue that just because you have a car crash in London, doesn't mean you would've still had one if you'd stayed in LiverpoolOriginally posted by dom9 View PostI think some of this is moot tbh.

I'm not a sports scientists or physio - but I presume the tendon was 'weak' in some sense before the injury - so it was a matter of time. I also don't know whether soft tissue scans might reveal such a weakness - or whether it's impossible to detect them. It's **** for him, that's for sure. Fingers crossed he gets back on the pitch for us, alongside Virge. Would hate to think that partnership reached its peak in 2018/19 and then ended due to injury.

That isn't my point at all though.Originally posted by Norbs View PostCould argue that just because you have a car crash in London, doesn't mean you would've still had one if you'd stayed in Liverpool

My point was that him being on England duty was coincidental to the injury happening. It's just where he happened to be when it happened.
If the injury was caused by fatigue, then it could just as easily happened while training at Melwood / Kirkby or playing for LFC or England.
Had the internationals not been taking place this week, the players would have been training anyway. They wouldn't have had a holiday.Oh I don't know.

They wouldn’t have had a holiday, but the training and recovery is monitored and tailored at Liverpool. Whereas with England it seems to be everybody turns up and gets chucked straight in.Originally posted by dom9 View PostThat isn't my point at all though.

We can’t blame the entire schedule on England, but if he’d been at Liverpool with 2 fixture free weeks ahead of him, I’m sure he’d have been afforded more recovery time from his recent playing schedule. Whether or not that would have ultimately made any difference though, who knows..

The lads mentioned body fatigue and load will be a big factor - Joe has a history of big injuries and given the volume of games he has less recovery time. Definitely a factorOriginally posted by greenturnip View PostI'm not a sports scientists or physio - but I presume the tendon was 'weak' in some sense before the injury - so it was a matter of time.
