Well when it is all laid out like that, something certainly makes more sense now.

Good point, though with Matip I see him as being on his way out given he has nine or ten months left on his contract with us.

If both were on form, then would have to agree that Matip is a better CB

Think we are cursed with our senior CB options not named VVD. All are very injury prone and unable to make either the starting berth or first back up slot their own.

Fully fit and on form all of Konate, Matip and Gomez are really good CBs and probably in that order.

Really good cameo again last night and should be the starter against Brighton imo.

The RB slot is his to lose at present. He is providing a bit more solidity in the role than TAA was and is also showing that he can do his share when it comes to creating chances too.

That's not the reality of it though, this double pivot system was designed around TAA, if he's fit he starts.

Gomez covers RB for him when he's out or needs a break, and Gomez will need to get his minutes mostly at CB
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

If we played Trent as an actual midfielder then Joe as a solid all round full back I’m on board with. He has had a very good start up the season where he seems to be in a physically good position after years of injuries. I saw him pirouetting into tackles in midfield when he inverted and losing the ball….. that I don’t want to see

Kind of defeats the point of other players trying then if a position cannot be won or held based on form.

Gomez has done well at RB, we have seen no drop off in quality from the position and we are giving up less chances per game from that side of the pitch since he came in.

We also have not seen a drop off in chances created by the team whilst TAA has been out, so not sure what exactly TAA just walking back into the team is based on, other than being the bigger name player.

If Gomez messes up or his form drops, and if TAA is doing well in training and in games like last night when that happens, then Gomez loses his place and the then in form player comes in, but until that happens I am of the thinking that you stick with the player that is in good form.

The reality of the situation may well be as you put it, but do not think any player should be guaranteed a starting position on anything other than form.

Gomez starts against Brighton, no way should we be chucking Trent back in against Mitoma

Our only two clean sheets of the season came with Trent playing and he was MOTM in our best performance.

I agree with ER and think Trent will start this. Harsh on Gomez and I'm a big fan of his, but if Trent is fully fit he should be starting. Trent can elevate us to levels that Gomez just isn't capable of, so if we're going to persist with this hybrid box formation, the more experience Trent gets the better.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Mitoma has had Trent on toast every time we've played Brighton

Last season pre Arsenal isn't a great barometer and based on those performances you could say similar about most of our players.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest who starts TBH, think it's a good time to play Brighton and we'll win regardless. I personally think Klopp will go for Trent, my preference (slightly) is to go with Trent and I wouldn't be concerned at all about what happened last season.

I hope we play Trent, it’s not like Gomez is a particularly error free defender himself. He’s got away with a few recently. Trent has been unlucky that his mistakes have all been punished with goals this season. Even looking at our goal highlights, Jota’s goal against Union began with Gomez jumping under a cross to the back post that he got away with because they had two players tripping over each other to control it, then we countered. **** teams in the UEFA don’t make you pay for errors as much as PL sides.

I think Gomez' positioning and awareness is far better when we lose possession.

Trent can add more going forward, but I am far from convinced the inversed fullback iss anything but a cluster**** in waiting.

Won't be discussed in many match reports and even had a tricky 10 mins 2nd half, but overall he was solid again. Absolutely perfect squad player this year, able to cover multiple positions and has rarely let us down.

Compared to Wank-Bissaka, he's a better passer of the ball, far superior going forward, and can defend just as abley.

Great performance at RB then with Quansah at CB. Looking the goods.
