He quite clearly tripped slightly which knocked the ball inches further forward than he wanted. A good defender (not Skrtel) would have pounced on the mistake at that point. That second of miscontrol put Skrtel in doubt and allowed Martial to regain control. With Skrtel frozen like a turkey it was straightforward really.Originally posted by Bryncoch View PostHe finished well but the run was more "the new ElHadj Diouf" than Thierry Henry. He didn't beat Skrtel with just skill, there was a lucky ricochet that fell just perfectly for him.
It was more Luis Suarez than Henry, except Luis Suarez means it and can repeat it ad infinitum. Martial didn't take that chance like a silky Henry, nor is he ever a Luis Suarez. Macheda comparisons are fantastically apt, one fluke to live off for the rest of his career. One tit for another.

Carra twice mentions Gomez's 'inexperience' meaning Ings had to drop too deep. But if you look at why Gomez is going closer to Lovren you'll understand he doesn't trust him at any point (or has been told to protect Lovren at all costs).
Its no surprise playing Lovren had this knock on effect. Had Gomez held his position Lovren and Liverpool would have been torn new arseholes in the first half. So the question is why Brendan, why? Why play Lovren at all?One tit for another.

When a team gets pressed they all sink back & generally revert to natural positions. You have to be bold to hold your position. None of our team had confidence after a 3-0 defeat to West Ham.Originally posted by BigChief View PostCarra twice mentions Gomez's 'inexperience' meaning Ings had to drop too deep. Problem is if you don't hold your position you become ineffective in possession. Football is about being confident. Having the confidence that if you push your attackers forward you will outgun the opposition if they dare to match your risk.
We played with that confidence in 13/14. We left Suarez & Sturridge up top and we dared teams to take a similar gamble. We also had the pace of Sterling on a break and the energetic Henderson pressing up and down all game. With the distribution from Gerrard we murdered teams.
I have to question if we could ever go back to that. I've seen our passing in games and we struggle to string three passes together. Teams can push on us and even if we had runners we couldn't expect Lucas to spray even a thirty yard pass forwards.
What we need is players in and around Benteke. He keeps winning balls in the air and by the time we catch up with play the opposition defence are all back in position. Hopefully Studge can do what Michael Owen used to do when he played with Heskey. Run in behind and cause havoc.
I have to wonder if he ever will though. Ings or Origi would love the chance I'm sure but they're not getting nothing.Forwards.......
