Well playing 4 at the back would aid him but with two stay at home midfielders and three CBs, cover shouldn't that that much of an issue if the ball is lost high up the field.

Wrong, he has been quietly doing his job. Getting his foot in, short quick passes to get the ball out of the immediate danger zone.

I wonder how late in the day we decided to play 3 at the back? Based one the fact we didn't have enough CB's in the squad to fill the bench I'm guessing it was pretty late.

Why bring someone like Cleary along, name him among the subs and then not use him when the opportunity comes up? Instead, let's stick Can in the middle of the back four where he does not belong.
