    Bob Paisley

    The greatest manager of the English game died on this day twenty year's ago.

    14 major titles in 9 seasons, manager of the year in six of them. Not even Fergie can quite match that (12 major titles in best 9 year spell).

                Luckily I first got into footy during the 1976-77 season so I experienced most of Bob's reign first hand including lots of magical European nights when Anfield was rocking

                Bob was always sat in his usual seat in the bottom right corner of the director's box. A reassuring sight for sure.

                The club was superbly run from top to bottom with owner John Smith, chief executive Peter Robinson, chief scout Tom Saunders and of course the great Bob Paisley managing and masterminding the team.

                The only downside is that the club has struggled mightily (and in all honestly largely failed) to get out of this era's shadow since Bob retired in 1983.

                  How did the club end up in the care of Moores?

                  It went from being progressive, innovative and a tour de force, to an institution which didn't know which way to turn, trapped in the headlights of a new era, and ultimately retreating into a spiral of introspection and clinging on to the past before putting the future first.

                  For all the flack those at the top rightly get when it goes wrong (in life generally), it goes to show that getting the right people in, in the first place is critical. And like the best footballers, the best executives make it look easy.

                    Moores only ever had control of the club just because the shares were in the family. He was evidently ill equipped to serve it, or indeed any business, well.

                      Celebrating Liverpool's first European Cup win in 1977
                      "This is the second time I've beaten the Germans here... the first time was in 1944. I drove into Rome on a tank when the city was liberated. If anyone had told me I'd be back here to see us win the European Cup 33 years later I'd have told them they were mad! But I want to savour every minute of it... which is why I'm not having a drink tonight. I'm just drinking in the occasion."

                        I think two things caused this..... Heysel and Hillsborough

                        I think those 2 events where enormous factors in our decline

                        That doesn't mean I disagree with what the club did during those periods but those events and the aftermath were crucial in what happened to our club
                        Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."
