I hate this ****. Basically confirms neither keeper is considered good enough to be the number 1. It's very arsenal. One game the defence know they have someone to come for crosses the next game not. It creates uncertainty. But it will keep him happy.

I'd be slightly annoyed if I was Mignolet. Only the second time we've qualified since he's joined the club and he'll be sat on the bench.

Agreed. I'm not sure I agree with this at all.

There's 2 other cups Karius could feature in. It's not like Mig needs a rest as keepers don't exert themselves in games much, and Karius has done nothing to deserve to play in important games. Odd

The only positive is that if Mig gets injured, then Karius isn't coming in cold - hopefully he will have some sort of half-decent form.

But for me, if you look at successful teams - I mean really successful teams of the past - then this didn't happen.

If either goalie (or both) make a **** up, then it might prove detrimental because they won't be thrown straight back in for the next game to get over it.

The teams that stand out as doing this in recent years have been Barca with Ter Stegen and Bravo, Arsenal and Man United last season with Romero. With the exception of Arsenal, the other teams had 2 really top keepers so it made a bit more sense.

It's clear Klopp rates him and wants him to develop. Not sure I agree either that but if he rapidly develops into a great keeper, then we will benefit. The chap needs games and he's guaranteed at least 6 games.

There's method in the madness. Many other clubs do the same thing.
We got most of our points last season with Karius in goal so he deserves it in some respects.

Bemused but unsurprised. That said I'm sure this sort of patience won't last forever. I think it's probably last chance this season for Karius to demonstrate his value.

                      Did we?

Obviously this sort of thing is quite common in Europe, so no wholly unsurprising. I can see the value in it too, Karius will get some much needed match practice in presumably a less physical environment. If he performs well, he’ll put pressure on Mig as No.1 and hopefully push him on and if Mig’s form does drop drastically, hopefully Karius will be in a much better position to step in.

That being said, I think I'm probably more open to the idea as we have a relatively easy group and it shouldn't really matter who's in nets.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

It keeps both keepers happy as neither are 'dropped' and both have game time.

                          All fine.

Except mignonet is at best, a good keeper and Karius is a train wreck.

Happy to be proved wrong.. blah blah. Sadly I don't think I will be.

                            In the Champions League?
                            Oh I don't know.

Before Bournemouth last year at the start of December, Karius was doing quite well, we were unbeaten with him in the team. He'd made a few mistakes along the way, but you could see the potential there. Admittedly it went to **** after that and he hasn't since recovered, but he's not a bad keeper as he proved in Germany.

Personally I wanted Ward to start in front of him when it was announced Mig was being rested for City, but I do think playing him in the CL is a good way to integrate him back into first team duties and see if he has what it take to take over from Mig as he was signed to do.#

Why is this of any surprise when Barcelona did the same thing with Ter Stegen in the CL?
