    We're In Decline

I think its time to acknowledge it.

We used to say we were challenging for the league every year, Rafa managed to maintain that pretence of a challenge for years against the odds, probably years after the reality that we had been left behind by the ambitions of the petro-rich and oligarchs.

    Its gone.

The start of this season has nailed it home to me that we are a team who can challenge on a one off, but the reality is that without the ridiculous finance of City, United or Abramovich, we're never going to be the best team in the Premier League.

United have gone out this season and signed one of the greatest players of the last 15 years, made a world record signing and signed sensibly across the rest of their squad, as well as getting a proven, league winning manager. City invested more than they ever have and recruited the most famous (if not the best) manager in the world.

Meanwhile - Liverpool signed Ragnar Klavan and moved James Milner to left back. Where the **** is the ambition? We have the right manager (allegedly) but still we persist with mediocrity. Moreno at left back, cheap solutions across the squad, whilst our "rivals" lash out on the best players from across the world.

What the **** is going on?

The ambiton used to be league titles. Now, its 4th place.

We've been in decline for years mate and it amazes me when I see our fans look down their nose at clubs like city and Chelsea as of we are superior to them when the hurtful truth is we are nowhere near them as they have won multiple titles over the years we haven't won one since 1990.

With the mainland and Klopp here I hope we start processing but it's getting harder than ever. We've just seen throughout TV deal in the history of English football kick in and our finances have never been better but our signings have been underwhelming.

For me the rot started when Gerrard started to wane. We had Gerrard, Alonso and Mascherano and some other random making up numbers in the front six and won the CL. Middle of the park is our most significant weakness and had been for years. We spend money but we spend it on lots of 20m (mostly AM) players because they are the only people we can attract. We need a central midfield that looks better than mid-table on paper and in practice and we have to pay whatever it takes to get it.

Now the club and some excellent managers don't seem to agree, ****ed if I know why but I guess it must be me.

We might as well have not changed the manager, because all the same ****ty faults are still apparent. We're ****! Might as well embrace it!

The rot started when Liverpool were still winning titles! No move to a new stadium when the club were at the peak, Kenny Dalglish taking his eye off the ball with some very poor transfers in 1989/1990. After that the whole Souness era and rolling from there on.

As Kenneth said we were in decline years ago.

Comparing us to the free spending clubs such as Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea doesn't really help, yes we have to compete with them but we all wanted Klopp as manager and he hasn't been someone who has bought expensive big name, big money signings, he has bought well and developed players and a team and if that is the way we are working it's going to take time. Which really isn't what we want to hear, we don't want another 5 year plan we want instant success.

Hopefully the likes of Matip, Grujic and Karius will improve the side when they are ready. We have the basis of a decent squad - it looks good on paper. Klopp needs to get the defensive side of the team working and get the attacking players to perform on a regular basis. The biggest problem with this squad IMO is a lack of leadership and mental strength

That was all fixable though, it was even fixable in the early 2000's - its gone now though. 25 years without a title says it all. We're history.

The problem has been when we have been in a position of strength we have either sold our best players (after title challenges) or failed to strengthen appropriately (after winning the CL), immediately putting ourselves a couple of paces back

It's amazing how highly FSG value Liverpool but when it comes to transfer fee's and wages it's another story.

I was watching football focus today and Karen Bradey was being interviewed about west hams stadium and she said something to the effect of "As an owner of a football club you can have the biggest and best stadium in the world but if you don't have the best team you have failed".

                            Spot on that imo.
