Nice pass from Robertson to start the move for second goal. Tidy pre-season from him too.

It's been a good pre season, shame about the injuries though.

Some cause for concern and plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Solanke, Kent and Woodburn look like they'll do well this season.

But our defence is shocking, luckily Watford are dog**** (did you see their pre-season game against Real Sociedad? http://www.fullmatchesandshows.com/2...ad-highlights/) so I think we should come away with our first three points of the season.

Well done Moreno for showing an eye for a pass and cutting out the wild challenges!

Solanke looks good, I think he'll do well and I am supremely confident in him succeeding at the club. Not sure about Kent and Woodburn though, just a nagging feeling neither will make it. TAA on the other hand will be a huge success going forward.

As for the defence, nothing has changed for me. They're still bad defenders, not all of them but in general. We are pretty scary in defence and I can't see that changing. Matip on his own isn't the answer and he runs like a Dinosaur with his arms out which is never a good sign. I don't know what we're going to do as I don't think we'll get anyone in. VVD was feeling confident about signing him but now I'm not so sure. We lack some serious depth of quality and it needs addressing.

It's all good from a squad perspective but we need a first team that can compete with the best in the PL and Europe. We need top quality players with experience.

On the train on my way back home now so observations from yesterday.

51,000 people attended so a good turn out but the atmosphere was actually pretty dull, you see when they play games in Asia/Australia in pre-season and they look far better in terms of the crowd getting involved. It was like an Anfield home game with moans and groans.

Mignolet looks much better with the ball at his feet but he needs an error free season before I'll trust him completely.

TAA - he looks a real athlete and I have big hopes for him for the future. He was caught positionally a few times but he is still young and learning the position but he could lock down the RB slot for years. He is also technically very good.

Moreno - did well, nothing daft so that is a big plus

Lovren - It is probably confirmation bias on my part as I'm not a fan but he was at fault for the goal so he didn't do his basic job. Goal aside he wasn't too bad but Williams caused him problems with his pace in behind.

Matip - solid if unspectacular - will be much better beside VVD.

Milner - did ok but if he is the Keita replacement then I do despair.

Grujic - a big lad and got stuck in. Another who will get better and could be a good long term squad player.

Can - did well, we need to sign his contract up.

Firmino - a real pest to play against, technically excellent and did really well for the pen.

Salah - going to get goals and assits + lots of them!

Origi - I just don't get it with him, he missed a sitter + another easy header. That is not why he disappointed me though - his general play was v poor. Never got ahead of his man, poor at holding the ball up and just looked uninterested.

                            The 2nd 11

Flanno - made a few decent tackles but that is it, woeful use of the ball and I can see why he couldn't get a game for Burnley.

Robertson - did all right going forward but didn't impress as much as Moreno.

Klavan - very solid and composed.

Gomez - physically a brute but his passing was very poor, he lost the ball so many times playing bad balls into midfield. He also took a lot of risks on the ball - maybe a loan where he can iron out those issues might help.

                            Gini - v solid.

Ejaria - another strange one, the game seemed to pass him by and didn't use his physicality well.

Woodburn - started badly by losing the ball too cheaply but around the box he comes to life, superb for the goal and only 17. He grew into the game after he scored, have big hopes for him.

Kent - tried too much fancy stuff and didn't keep it simple.

Mane - looks a real threat and him and Salah are going to terrorise defences.

Solanke - everything that Origi is not, v impressive and tried hard. Good on the ball and used his body well to get ahead of the CBs when contesting headers. Looks a real prospect.

On the Bilbao side - was disappointed Laporte & Munian didn't play but Williams looked decent but not €50m decent.

yeah, of our young players i thought solanke was the only one who looked ready to play in the prem, aside from taa obviously. woodburn was having a mare giving loose balls away before his goal, and kent wasn't as composed as i would've liked which for me just means he's not ready. needs to get his consistency up.

Keep in mind Woodburn is a forward playing in midfield. It's completely new ground for him. Oh and he's 17.
