Andrew Robertson set to sign new five-year Liverpool contract

Andrew Robertson’s effervescent performances in Liverpool’s title push are being rewarded with the Scotland international now close to agreeing a new five-year contract.

Negotiations with the left-back are on the brink of completion with the new deal securing the future of 24-year-old Robertson until the summer of 2024.

The agreement ensures another prized member of Jürgen Klopp’s squad has committed the best years of his career to the club and follows recent deals for Joe Gomez and Sadio Mané. Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah signed long-term extensions last summer.

It is likely that Trent Alexander-Arnold will be the next player to sign a new contract to reflect the 20-year-old’s own eye-catching progress.

Robertson’s drive and dependability at full back has become a key part of Liverpool’s development and serves to reflect how the down-to-earth defender has seized the chance to establish himself under Klopp.

Liverpool’s search for a new left back in the summer of 2017 had seen them initially target Emerson Palmieri, then of AS Roma and now of Chelsea. However, he suffered a cruciate knee injury in the final game of the 2016-17 season against Genoa, forcing Klopp to look elsewhere.

Robertson had long been linked with Liverpool. But his arrival from Hull City after the start of pre-season highlighted how Klopp felt the player was a gamble even at a fee of £8 million, which was subsequently offset by the sale of Kevin Stewart for a similar value back to The Tigers.

Both player and manager have admitted his first months at Anfield were difficult with Robertson behind Alberto Moreno in the pecking order and often omitted from matchday squads because Klopp did not feel the need to have two left backs in his 18-man pool, especially given the versatility of James Milner.

Indeed, it required a knee injury sustained by Moreno in a Champions League game with Spartak Moscow in December 2017 for a window of opportunity to present itself to Robertson.

He has leapt through it to become indispensable at club level while also being appointed as Scotland captain.

Moreno has managed just 12 appearances for Liverpool since losing his place through injury and will leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. A return to Spain is likely for the former Seville player.

Daniel Sturridge — who has until February to respond to a FA misconduct charge relating to betting — will also depart with his contract scheduled to run out in the summer.

mild panic to see this bumped.

Well deserved, must surely be doubling or trebling his wages. I wouldn't sell him for 100 million

I'm not sure I could have coped with Ronaldo finishing us off in Kiev.

            What a tackle.

That tackle is outstanding. Robbo comes from out of nowhere.

Very well deserved new contract, he is an absolutely key member of the first XI.

It has been interesting to view Robbos ever increasing confidence within the group, through his media commitments and the social media stuff he takes part in. He really has grown into his role within the club over the last 12 months.

Difficult to imagine him being more loved by the fans... But this kind of thing will definitely do it.
