A club could block a player from going but the International side can then lodge a complaint which would see the player miss the next club game.

Plus you could also end up with disgruntled players if you stopped them playing for their country.


Bigger issue is the amount of pointless international friendlies dotted throughout the season.

you don’t want to get a reputation as being a club who stops their players from representing their country. This one’s on Robbo for me. He would have done well to say I’m just back from injury, still building up my fitness, best thing is to stay in Liverpool and use the time to get myself fit, for the title run in.

He’s a senior player, should be smart enough to realize he has bigger fish to fry at the moment, than an international friendly. At this point, if he’s out for a few weeks, I would say the left back is Gomez’s place to lose until the end of the season. If he continues to deliver as he has been, I would say if it’s not broke, don’t fix it, especially if there’s only 5/6 games left when robbo comes back.

Give robbo Europa and bench appearances and let him try to win his place back.

He could also have seen it as a way to get minutes on the pitch to get match sharp. Plus as Deano said he is the captain of Scotland so even a firendly probably means a lot to him.



I don't put any of it on the player or club. It is on the pen pushers that just want to cram in more and more money spinning internationals into every season.
